Two Overlooked Stars Keeping Packers Alive
· Yahoo Sports
The 2026 Green Bay Packers look and feel like a bad team that has miraculously beaten even worse teams. The coaching and scheme have not consistently aligned with the players’ abilities to execute, while gut-wrenching injuries have left Green Bay relying on backups across multiple position groups. And it is only Week 5. For a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, the Packers may already be flirting with desperation mode.
Two Overlooked Stars Keeping Packers Alive
Still, there is a lot of football left to play, and anything can happen over the course of a season, especially if Green Bay can find a way into the playoffs. That is where the impact of quarterback Jordan Love and safety Evan Williams becomes so important. While the Packers have struggled to find consistency as a team, Love has taken a noticeable step forward at quarterback, while Williams has emerged as one of the defense’s most impactful players.

Love has shown drastically improved pocket presence, a quicker trigger and much better decision-making under pressure, giving the offense a chance to stay afloat despite its many shortcomings on the offensive line. On the other side of the ball, Williams has played at an All-Pro level, consistently making plays and providing a spark for a defense that desperately needs difference-makers. If those two can continue playing at this level, they give Green Bay at least two legitimate building blocks to cling to as the season unfolds.
Pressured Pookie
Around this time last year, Love’s teammates started calling him “Pookie.” There is a good reason why. This is Love’s fourth year in command of the Green Bay offense, and he has led the Packers to three straight playoff appearances. His passer rating has also improved in each of his first three seasons as a starter, despite never having a true number one wide receiver. In fact, none of Love’s first three seasons as a starter featured a Packers receiver eclipsing 860 receiving yards.
Love has always done a good job spreading the ball around, but a myriad of injuries over the course of his years as starter have robbed him and the Packers offense of consistency and stability at the receiver position. On top of that, Love has arguably never faced more pressure than he has this season. He took 30 sacks in 17 games during his first season as a starter, and he is currently on pace to take 34 this year, largely because of the Packers’ constantly shuffled and ineffective offensive line.
Surgically Shifty in the Pocket
Despite the lack of stability at receiver (Jayden Reed will be sorely missed) and consistently poor offensive line play, Love ranks sixth in the NFL in passing yards through Week 4. He has thrown just three interceptions and, perhaps most impressively, has taken only eight sacks. That number is genuinely baffling considering the Packers’ offensive line play has been putrid. Love’s quick decision-making and improved pocket presence have helped mask an offensive line that has been embarrassingly bad.
This offense has shown it will put points on the board when its best players are available. The bigger question is whether the offensive line can give Love enough time to fully capitalize on that potential. The results on play action capture just how dangerous this offense can be when Love has time to operate, as he is 22-of-30 for 238 yards and four touchdowns on play-action passes this season. If Green Bay can give its quarterback just a little more time, Love could catapult himself into a Pro Bowl season, a league-wide honor he somehow has yet to earn.
Versatile Violence
Evan Williams leads the Packers in total tackles with 36 through four games, and Packers fans sure can tell. The third-year safety has been all over the field, with his 22 solo tackles ranking among the top 10 in the NFL. Williams plays with a ferocious intensity in the secondary, and the hits he delivers on would-be receivers are often bone-crushing. He also leads the Packers in passes defended, largely because of the power behind his well-timed hits when receivers first get their hands on the ball.
One of Williams’ biggest strengths is his versatility, which does not always show up in the box score. First-year defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon loves what that versatility can do for his defense, as the Packers played all three of their safeties on 95% of their snaps in Week 4. His physicality and willingness to both deliver contact and take on blockers are invaluable for a Packers defense that just lost its best linebacker, Edgerrin Cooper.
Defense Needs a Voice
The Packers have yet to force a fumble this season, and Williams is arguably the player best poised to change that. His physical style makes him a natural candidate to create turnovers, especially as Green Bay looks for ways to compensate for the loss of Cooper. It should be noted that Williams is not a direct replacement for Cooper, but his versatility could help fill some of the void Cooper leaves across the defense, particularly in short-to-intermediate coverage and in run defense.
More than anything, this point in the season has become a moment for Williams to become the vocal leader for the entire defense. Green Bay needs someone who can bring the same intensity and physicality every snap, and Williams has already shown he is more than capable of being that guy. Packers fans should look to Williams as well as captain and defensive playcaller Zaire Franklin to set the tone for the defense, demand discipline and keep the unit locked in when things start to unravel.
The Last Word
The Packers are far from a complete football team, but they are not completely without hope. Through the first four weeks of this season, Love has shown he can elevate an offense despite terrible protection, while Williams has become one of the defense’s most reliable playmakers at a time when Green Bay desperately needs them. The return of Micah Parsons could provide another much-needed boost, but the Packers still need their established stars to lead the way. Green Bay did not enter 2026 to develop for the future, and neither did their fans. They came to win, and Love and Williams may be the best reasons to believe that is still possible.
