So, it decided to put more bulk on the field. Port Clinton loaded up to start the second half and Jace Cornell busted a touchdown run covering about 80 yards in a 24-10 victory over Clyde.
Cornell slithered along the sideline and looked to be stopped, before emerging from traffic to the end zone. Port Clinton remains unbeaten after five games.
"We came out slow," Cornell said. "Our line is young. (Offensive coordinator) Beau (Carmon) said we were going to punch the ball. That run set the tone. It was a downhill run, coming in with that heavy set. If you can't hit the middle, I bounced it.
"They didn't wrap up and the next thing you know, I'm breaking it for a touchdown."
Clyde's Mitchell Newsome opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal, before Port Clinton's Beckett Mizener responded with a short touchdown run for a 7-3 margin at the half. The Fliers' Max Miller and Hector Garza had sacks on consecutive plays to force a change of possession in the first half.
"We didn't play well, but we found a way," Port Clinton coach Kevin Huntley said. "A young team can panic, but the kids trusted the coaches and we got something going."
Cornell, Mizener and Elliot Laird form a committee at running back.
"It's a three-headed beast," Huntley said. "Mizener is the lead guy, but we mix and change."
The passing game clicked late in the third quarter as Landon Leis found Danny Baker with a touchdown over the top. Baker added an interception early in the fourth quarter.
"Oh, man, that's one kid who if you throw it up, something good will come down," Cornell said of Baker. "Throw it up, there's a 90% chance he comes down with it."
Adam Fitt lined up a field goal for Port Clinton before Karcen Garner capped the scoring from two yards out for Clyde (1-4). Luas Bodie added an interception for Port Clinton.
Clyde coach Eric Leuthold was at the helm for Port Clinton last season.
"He's my head coach my first three years," Cornell said. "Seeing him leave was a challenge, but our athletic director got us Kevin Huntley. I couldn't ask for a better situation. Don't make the game (at Clyde) personal and play with too much emotion.
"Buckle down."
