Jared Verse went from a Super Bowl contender to one of the NFL's youngest rebuilding projects in less than 24 hours. When he sat down with Browns reporters at his introductory news conference in Berea on Wednesday, he never dressed it up.
"It caught me by surprise," Verse said. "I loved L.A. I loved the coaches, the organization, my teammates, everybody who was a part of it, the staff, the fans. I loved the whole vibe of L.A. It was upsetting. I was upset for a good little bit of time."
The 25-year-old edge rusher was part of the package the Los Angeles Rams sent to Cleveland on Monday in exchange for Myles Garrett, which also included a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second, and a 2029 third.
Two years ago, he was a first-round pick with a Rams team built to compete. He woke up Monday as a member of an organization that has won 16 total games across the past two seasons and made three playoff appearances in 21 years.
What Verse said about accepting the business side and using it as motivation
"When you're an athlete, you understand the nature of business. Everybody does what they think is best for their business and that's the situation that I'm in. I'm happy to be a part of the Browns. I'm happy that they believe in me and that they were able to make that trade and bring me here," Verse said.

He also said the trade has recharged a quality that has followed him his entire career.
"Definitely puts a chip on my shoulder," Verse said. "I have always been doubted my whole life. Coming out of high school, one offer. I still had that chip on my shoulder. It's a different type of feeling."
Verse started his college career at Albany before transferring to Florida State, where he became a first-round talent. The path from FCS to the NFL to now being handed a cornerstone role in Cleveland's rebuild tracks a specific kind of resilience.
Verse was born in Dayton, Ohio. He is coming home to a franchise without a Super Bowl appearance since 1964.
