The Carolina Panthers are sitting atop the NFC South heading into Week 9, but there is some real concern about this team with a 3-4 record following two brutal losses.

They lost 43-13 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and then 27-19 to the Green Bay Packers. While their run defense struggled against the Buccaneers, their pass defense couldn't stop the Packers in Week 8.

To try to fix things on the back end of the defense, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are signing 26-year-old cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the practice squad.

Panthers sign Jakorian Bennett to bolster CB depth

"The Panthers signed former Raiders and Eagles CB Jakorian Bennett to the practice squad," Rapoport reported.

This isn't a massive move for the Panthers, but considering the team's shaky defensive back depth, Bennett might get real playing time in the not-too-distant future.

Will Lee III, Mike Jackson, Akayleb Evans, and Jaycee Horn are all hurt right now. Only Lee has a chance to play in Week 9 against the Broncos.

If Lee can't go, the Panthers will be down to relying on Malcolm DeWalt IV a lot, as the rest of their CB depth chart is banged up. Bennett might see a role right away as the Panthers' CB room is dealing with a lot of injury issues.

Bennett is 26 years old and has played in 35 games across three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles. He has 12 passes defended with 65 total tackles in his career to go with a solid 81.5 passer rating allowed.

Across the 2025 and 2024 seasons, he's allowed a 66.5 and 67.7 passer rating, respectively. He hasn't played in 2026 as he's dealt with an injury issue, but now with the Panthers, he might be good to go.

Carolina needs all the help they can get on defense, as their CB room is very depleted by injuries. Bennett might play a big role in Week 9, as the Panthers' cornerback injuries are reaching a breaking point.
