The Battle for the Heartland starts all over again on Saturday when No. 25 Wisconsin hopes to improve its standing in the Big Ten with a road win at Iowa. The Badgers are 3-1 in the conference and hold seniority for now, but the 2-2 Hawkeyes can move level in the Big Ten pecking order after winning the past four meetings between these two sides.
Kirk Ferentz was coaching Iowa’s offensive line during the 1980s when the program enjoyed its greatest dynasty of success in this series, going undefeated in 18 straight encounters with Wisconsin between 1977 and 1996. Now in his 28th year as head coach, he could still play a major role in birthing another dominant streak after hammering the Badgers 37-0 in their own backyard last October.
A Week 5 loss to No. 2 Ohio State (ranked fifth at the time) was acceptable enough for Iowa, but the same might not be said for last Saturday’s narrow slip at Minnesota. The merry-go-round between quarterbacks Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski continued in Minneapolis, and not necessarily to a net positive as the pair combined for just one scoring pass but three interceptions in a set-up that’s not quite clicking.
Ferentz has indicated Brown will start this weekend’s rivalry game but that Hecklinski will again be involved in news that may concern fans. Coming off the back of a dominant 24-7 win over No. 16 USC, Wisconsin will seek to exploit that indecision and prove it belongs in the CFP conversation by bringing the Heartland Trophy home for the first time since 2021.
