Brown and Tatum were once one of the most formidable duos in the NBA, leading the Boston Celtics to five Eastern Conference Finals, two NBA Finals, and an NBA championship in 2024.
However, the last few years have seen their relationship collapse, as their individual rises to superstardom got in the way of their friendship.
John Wall says Jayson Tatum’s return from Achilles injury led to friction with Jaylen Brown
In an interview with Ashley Nicole Moss of Complex, former NBA All-Star John Wall discussed the issues Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum had with each other that led to their partnership collapsing.
He believes that Brown getting to experience playing without Tatum, only to be sidelined when Tatum returned, made a huge difference.
In particular, Brown no longer getting the distinction of being announced last in the starting lineup when Tatum returned showed him that Tatum will always be considered the superstar.
Wall said: “Everybody thought Boston was going to be on a rebuild last year, and the way Jaylen Brown played got them there. Now Tatum comes back, and it’s like, ‘Okay, Tatum’s playing well, but he’s not playing at his All-Star level, MVP level.’
“So now, is Jaylen Brown taking a back seat? Like, even he said, the first game when Tatum came back, Jaylen Brown was getting called out last every game of the season.
“Now Tatum’s back, he goes back to second-to-last. It be those little triggering points that make people, like, go against it. I think that’s when Boston started realising, like, somebody got to go, and it ain’t going to be Tatum.”
For years, the belief had been that the Celtics value Jayson Tatum more than Jaylen Brown as the main superstar of the franchise.
Even after Jaylen Brown won Finals MVP en route to the 2024 NBA Championship, the Celtics seemingly valued Tatum more, with the former Duke standout getting the biggest contract in NBA history at the time, just a year after Brown got a similar deal.
Now, Brown and Tatum are rivals in the Eastern Conference, playing for two of the most historic franchises and hoping to get back to the NBA Finals.
