‘Then You Become Vulnerable’: Aad de Mos Exposes PSV’s Problem After 1-1 Feyenoord Draw

· Yahoo Sports

Former PSV coach Aad de Mos believes Peter Bosz’s side paid the price for failing to establish a two-goal lead before half-time in their 1-1 draw against Feyenoord, while also highlighting the squad’s lack of depth amid a growing list of absences.

PSV dominated much of the first half at the Philips Stadion and deservedly went ahead through Guus Til. However, the hosts failed to turn their superiority into a more comfortable advantage, allowing Feyenoord to recover after the break and equalise through Anis Hadj Moussa.

Speaking in a video feature for Eindhovens Dagblad alongside PSV correspondent Rik Elfrink, De Mos argued that PSV’s limited options from the bench made it difficult for Bosz to change the course of the match.

De Mos felt PSV should have put the contest beyond Feyenoord before the interval. Instead, Bosz was forced to turn to young players Mikkel Bro Hansen and Shuryjano Cornecion as he searched for a way to restore his side’s advantage.

“PSV should already have made it 2-0 before the break. They tried to fix it after the break with two young lads, but that didn't work,” De Mos said.

“Then you actually needed Pepi or Lammers, but they weren't available due to injuries. Then you become a bit vulnerable.”

The former PSV manager believes the absence of experienced attacking options left Bosz with limited alternatives when the game became more difficult. While the youngsters were given opportunities, De Mos suggested that PSV lacked the firepower to make the decisive difference from the bench.

He also warned that the problem could become more significant if PSV continue to lose ground in the Eredivisie title race.

De Mos acknowledged that PSV have previously managed to overcome similar difficulties, pointing to their recent Champions League trip to Porto. However, he stressed that positive results cannot always be taken for granted when a squad is stretched by injuries and unavailable players.

“In certain matches you need that. It doesn’t break you in Porto either; even in Porto you could have broken it down. There it still works out well, but you can see that it doesn’t always work out. Now it’s a matter of the art of not falling further behind,” he said.

For De Mos, the immediate priority is to recover key players and restore strength to the squad before the situation deteriorates further.

“A few players have to return now, to become a bit stronger. Otherwise, maybe something can still be fixed during the winter break,” he added.

His comments underline the importance of squad depth for Bosz, particularly during a demanding period in which PSV are competing on multiple fronts.

Despite the disappointing result, De Mos did not believe PSV had produced a poor performance. Elfrink also highlighted the hosts’ intensity before half-time, noting that Feyenoord struggled to create meaningful danger during that period.

“Perisic and Kostic were strong on the left-hand side. PSV was aggressive before halftime and Feyenoord really didn't pose much of a threat. The chances had to be converted by PSV,” Elfrink said.

That failure proved costly after the interval, when Hadj Moussa produced the decisive moment for Feyenoord. The winger cut inside before firing home the equaliser, demonstrating the individual quality that can change a match in an instant.

De Mos praised the attacker’s ability to deliver in precisely those situations.

“In these kinds of situations, he is a master and can decide a match in a flash, through his coming inside. That is a weapon that is very difficult to defend. You know what he’s going to do and yet he shoots the ball brilliantly into the net,” he said, as quoted by PSV Inside.

PSV were left to rue their missed first-half opportunities, while Feyenoord departed with a valuable point. For De Mos, the draw illustrated two connected problems for Bosz: failing to kill off a match when PSV are on top and lacking sufficient options to change things when the momentum shifts.
