Michael Carrick has been granted a reprieve by Manchester United.

Carrick had been widely anticipated to be dismissed following the disastrous 3-0 loss to AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. However, he survived emergency discussions at Carrington on Monday and led training as normal on Tuesday ahead of a crucial Premier League fixture against Chelsea this weekend.

United have secured just two victories from their 12 matches across all competitions this season. They sit 16th in the Premier League, having amassed just seven points from eight games - the club's poorest opening since 1986/87.

The club have evaluated potential replacements, including Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte, but have opted to maintain the status quo for the time being. Director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell are reportedly divided over Carrick's replacement, with the former backing Howe and the latter supporting Nagelsmann, as per The Mirror.

Carrick acknowledged that he was uncertain about his situation after presiding over the second devastating and humiliating loss on Sunday. "It's a tough situation, there's no hiding from it," he told Sky Sports when asked about his future.

"But what it looks like and what's next, I really don't know. I will always do what's best for this football club, I've said it all along and I don't change that now. I love what I do, I love the position I'm in. I feel the responsibility, but we'll have to wait and see."

Carrick was called into Carrington on Monday for discussions with club executives and returned in the early hours of Tuesday. He is conducting training as normal ahead of Saturday's early kick-off against Chelsea.

Carrick appeared visibly emotional as he departed the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday, with United supporters chanting his name in a show of backing. The former midfielder acknowledged the crowd in a manner that many interpreted as a farewell gesture.

He was only appointed as permanent manager in the summer, having made a positive impression following his arrival in January in the aftermath of Ruben Amorim's dismissal.

Results have not gone according to plan, however, with just two victories secured so far this season, against newly-promoted Ipswich Town and UEFA Champions League minnows Sabah. Recent weeks have also seen defender Lisandro Martínez and captain Bruno Fernandes publicly voice their frustrations.

Having been afforded time to turn things around, Carrick faces an extremely challenging stretch of fixtures in the coming weeks. After taking on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend, United face AS Roma, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Sporting Lisbon and Brentford across the Premier League and Champions League.
