Jamie Carragher says Rio Ferdinand and Piers Morgan are ‘embarrassing themselves’ by defending Cristiano Ronaldo

Jamie Carragher said Rio Ferdinand and Piers Morgan are ‘embarrassing themselves’ by defending Cristiano Ronaldo after his Portugal walk-out.

Ronaldo made headlines during the recent international break by suddenly leaving his country’s Nations League camp following a rift with manager Jorge Jesus.

While the 41-year-old then apologised for his behaviour, he accused Jesus of breaking his word to him.

Ronaldo’s actions were defended by Morgan and Ferdinand, who are both friends with the Al Nassr striker.

Morgan likened Jesus to Erik ten Hag, while Ferdinand said the treatment of the Portuguese star was ‘inappropriate’.

Carragher blasted both pundits on the Overlap Daily, saying: ‘People like Piers Morgan and Rio Ferdinand, who are big people in the media whether you like them or not, are embarrassing themselves with the nonsense that they’re coming out with because they know Ronaldo.”

Ronaldo is one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game.

He has won numerous trophies during his career, including five Champions Leagues, three Premier League titles, two Nations Leagues and the 2016 European Championship.

Ronaldo now aims to become the first player in history to reach 1,000 goals in official matches. He only needs 20 more goals to reach the historic milestone.

But at 41, he is a fading force. Jesus made the right decision by playing Goncalo Ramos, who justified his manager’s faith by scoring three goals in three games.

Ronaldo is still clinical in front of goal, but the team suffers due to his reduced mobility and minimal defensive contribution.
