The victory marked a massive milestone for the Patriots (3-4), halting a frustrating run of close losses and securing their first home win of the 2026 campaign.
Throughout regulation, Red Land found itself constantly fighting uphill. Gettysburg (4-3) controlled the tempo and held the advantage for the majority of the night, leaving the Patriots scratching and clawing to stay within striking distance. Running back Trevor Cunningham grinded out 175 yards on 19 carries and three TDs, while quarterback Grant Johnson threw for 176 yards and two scores.
The Red Land offense, which suffered through a sluggish start over the game's opening two drives, eventually found its rhythm behind the play of quarterback Tucker Baker (18-26 for 217 yards) and an offense that rediscovered its true identity. The hosts scored on the last play of the first half and then followed up with a TD drive to open the third-quarter to even the score.
For the Patriots, Friday’s second-half brought back painful memories of just a week prior when they dropped an agonizing overtime decision on the road against Hershey after giving up a late lead.

Red Land star running back Tyson Kirchner, who ran for 201 yards on 38 carries and scored three TDs, reflected on the lingering weight of that loss.
"Last week we went into overtime with Hershey... we were winning with like a minute and fifty left,” Kirchner said. “They ended up scoring, and they beat us in overtime. But to come and play overtime again and actually win, that was amazing."
The back-and-forth battle eventually pushed past regulation and into an intense extra couple of sessions. Both teams converted on their opportunities in the first OT. Once the game reached double overtime, Red Land finally captured its first lead of the night as Kirchner hauled in a 12-yard TD pass from Baker on a fourth-and-12, a score that flipped the script squarely on Gettysburg for the first time all evening.
After Johnson scored on a 2-yard run for the Warriors in the second OT, the visitors were facing a pivotal two-point conversion to decide the outcome. Kick or go for two?
Gettysburg head coach Jake Johnson acknowledged the high-stakes reality he and his team were facing when we signaled for a two-point play.
"I just knew that they were going to do it if they got the ball back, and we were going to have to do it eventually anyway,” Johnson said. “It was going to come to two-point conversions."
The Patriots defense stood tall when it mattered most. On the game-deciding two-point attempt, the home team made a championship-level defensive stop of Johnson just shy of the goal line to seal the dramatic 49-48 triumph.
Coach Johnson tipped his cap to the opposition afterward.
"You get an opportunity from 2 yards away... but they made a great play. Kudos to them."
In the end, the emotional victory provided a much-needed injection of belief for a resilient Red Land squad playing in front of an erupting home crowd. Patriots head coach Jaimie Thomas couldn’t help but smile about the significance of his team’s perseverance.
"We know what it takes now,” Thomas said. “We have each other's backs, offense and defense. That's what the family does... That was so needed for our guys. For them to believe at home and for our home fans."
