Kelsey Mitchell is heading into unrestricted free agency following a career-defining run with the Indiana Fever. Sharing the backcourt with Caitlin Clark, Mitchell unlocked another scoring gear, putting up a career-high 24.7 points per game while dropping a sizzling 45% of her shots from beyond the arc.

Her explosive offense turned Indiana into a legitimate playoff threat, but with her contract up, she holds all the cards. While the Fever view re-signing her as a top priority, Mitchell will have max-money offers from almost every team in the league.

Courtney Williams on Kelsey Mitchell’s future with Indiana

With Kelsey Mitchell set to test free agency, Courtney Williams isn’t buying the push for a fresh start away from Indiana. Addressing online chatter, Williams dropped a blunt, real-world reality check: court chemistry with a star like Caitlin Clark doesn’t grow on trees, and walking away comes with serious risk.

She said: “I see what everybody’s saying or whatever, but quite frankly, I’m gonna keep it real. Yeah, she had one of her best years once Caitlin Clark got there, she started going off. And I’m not saying she’s not a great player, because I think she’s gonna be who she’s gonna be wherever she goes, but I’m just saying: when you find that type of chemistry with a player, y’all are looking at what was the best backcourt duo in damn near WNBA history.

“I don’t know. I feel like when you find that type of chemistry, I get that it comes with a lot of noise, because obviously with the Indiana fanbase and all the eyes that come with Clark, I understand all that. But basketball-wise? You had some of your best years, and those folks over there are giving you a bag. Y’all have been over there building something together. So I’m just saying, bro, that grass ain’t all that green.”

Mitchell cannot be cored again, leaving her options wide open as an unrestricted free agent. Re-signing in Indiana makes total basketball sense, as the chemistry with Caitlin Clark was off the scales. But to truly contend, Indiana must add more depth to really show ambition this offseason.

However, what doesn’t help the Fever is the fact that Mitchell has admitted that she needs to be selfish during the offseason, given the stage she’s at in her career.
