The New Orleans Saints entered the Superdome on an emotional anniversary. Monday’s showdown against the Atlanta Falcons marked the 20th anniversary of the franchise’s first home game in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Running back Alvin Kamara made sure the home crowd would be cheering loud.

Kamara, the longest tenured Saints player dating back to the Sean Payton/Drew Brees era, scored his first 2026 touchdown. And Kamara punched the ball in inside the five-yard line to slice the Falcons’ lead.

So that score swung the momentum back New Orleans’ way to start the second quarter. Plus reenergized the home crowd in what became a slow start for coach Kellen Moore and company.

Kamara wasn’t on the Saints’ roster when the franchise made their way back inside the Superdome in 2006. Katrina ripped through the city in what became the costliest and most damaging hurricane ever on American soil. Even the famed Superdome received structural damage. That forced the Saints to play their home games in San Antonio during the 2005 season.

But the Saints’ iconic home was rebuilt and stronger than ever for the Falcons/Saints showdown of the 2006 season. That MNF game featured one revered moment: Steve Gleason blocking the punt to start the game and spark the Saints’ turnaround that season. That New Orleans team led by Brees and a young Reggie Bush played in the NFC Championship game before losing to the Chicago Bears.

Now Kamara is aiming to create new loud energy inside the dome on the Saints’ special night commemorating their emotional return.
