USF, Augustana prepare for Key to the City game

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) - The Key to the City rivalry game is one of the main stays in Sioux Falls. It's a game that brings passion, heart, and plenty of sleepless nights.

"The coach talk would say we've moved past it. It's over," said University of Sioux Falls head coach Jim Glogowski in an interview on Tuesday. "But the reality of it is, as a head football coach for me, and I mentioned this to somebody else, it's maybe one of the toughest losses I've had as a head football coach. And I'm not saying that's going to have any effect on Saturday or anything about me during the week, but, it's one of those games where I still haven't brought myself to watch the last 11, 12 minutes of that game."

Seperated by just a third of a mile, Augustana University and the University of Sioux Falls first matched up on the gridiron in 1922. 104 years later, this game has more juice than ever before.

"A lot of them are buddies and they each other and might have played with each other in high school or what have you," said Augustana head coach Jerry Olszewski in an interview on Tuesday. "When the 60 minutes is done, that lasts for 12 months, adn you could say that about every game, but this one has a little more flavor to it. Obviously a lot more flavor, it matters."

Both teams sit at 3-2 and will likely need to win out to have a chance at the playoffs. For USF, a win this week would bring the key back to Coo Falls for the first time since 2022.

"There's no guarantee you're going to get in, especially with how the playoff rankings have kind of changed a little bit," said Glogowski. "But at the end of the day we've got to take it week-by-week. This week you're going across town, you're playing a rival that we haven't beaten in three years. Some of those things are just so heavy that I don't know the other stuff necessarily matters. We're so focused on trying to go one and zero this wek and take care of business."

Olszewski holds the same mentality as the Vikings look to win its fourth straight game in this series.

"We need to be 100% focused on the University of Sioux Falls, what they bring to the table, a talented football team," said Olszewski. "Records are equal and everything else, but it's going to come down to 60 minutes and then that's going to divide another row, if you will, until the next challenge comes."

The Key to the City game will kick off at 1 p.m. from Kirkeby-Over Stadium on Saturday.
