The Panthers announced Wednesdaythat both defensive backs were placed on IR, meaning each will miss at least four games. The moves leave Carolina without two important pieces of its secondary as the team prepares for a challenging matchup against Detroit.

Horn is dealing with what the Panthers described as a “significant quad injury.” The former first-round pick suffered the injury during Carolina’s Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns, when he was hurt on what ultimately became the game-winning touchdown in the Browns’ 21-18 victory.

The injury is another frustrating setback for Horn, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career. The Panthers selected him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he has since earned two Pro Bowl selections.

Horn addressed the latest setback on Instagram, acknowledging how difficult injuries have been throughout his career and expressing his frustration over another obstacle to reaching his full potential.

Jackson’s streak comes to an end

Jackson Jr. is also headed to IR after suffering a groin injury. The veteran cornerback had established remarkable durability before the setback, appearing in 73 consecutive games and making 41 straight starts.

His absence will force Carolina to adjust its secondary heading into a critical stretch of the season. Losing both Horn and Jackson Jr. at the same time could create additional opportunities for other defensive backs on the roster.

The Panthers made several corresponding moves Wednesday. The team signed wide receiver David Moore and running back Anthony Tyus III from its practice squad while also adding defensive back Robert Rochell to the practice squad.

Rochell is a familiar face in Carolina. The Panthers originally selected him in the fourth round of the 2021 draft, and he has already spent two previous stints with the organization.

Carolina will now turn to its remaining defensive backs as it prepares to host the Lions on Sunday, with both Horn and Jackson unavailable for at least the next four games.
