San Francisco 49ers Urged to Make Major Mac Jones Decision

The San Francisco 49ers have become a team mentioned quite often in the NFL rumor mill following Week 2. Those rumors would not see the team acquire a player. Instead, they would see the 49ers opt to trade one.
Mac Jones has become a hot topic across the NFL. Quite a few teams saw their starting quarterbacks go down with injury this week.

Among those teams and quarterbacks were Jaxson Dart of the New York Giants, Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears, and Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders. Williams isn’t expected to miss much time, but both Daniels and Dart will be out for awhile. Dart, in particular, is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Could San Francisco end up receiving aggressive trades offers for Jones from a team like the Giants? Should the 49ers listen to those offers if they do come in?
San Francisco has been urged to listen to trade offers for Jones.

Mark Willard of 95.7 The Game thinks that the 49ers should be open to the idea of trading Jones if the right price is offered.
“I hope that the 49ers can keep Mac Jones, but yes, you would be open to listening. Usually, trades at the trade deadline are not player-for-player in the NFL. It’s usually a pick for a player,” Willard said.
“So I get that. But if there’s a team that has really arrived at a position of need and they’re desperate and they’re willing to overpay, and you could, for instance, get a pick and a player or whatever in return, I’d sure be open to it. And the reason is simply this: He’s a free agent, so he’s going to be gone after this year one way or another.”
He makes a good point. San Francisco could end up capitalizing on another team’s bad fortune. Jones is likely to walk for a starting opportunity following the 2026 NFL season anyway.
Keeping Jones still makes sense if the right trade isn’t offered. Brock Purdy has had some injury issues over the years. Jones is an elite backup.
However, if a team is willing to overpay to acquire the backup quarterback, the 49ers should pull the trigger. It’s a scenario worth keeping a very close eye on as the trade deadline continues drawing closer.
