Following a second straight disappointing season, the New York Mets could have been tempted to hire a flashy name as their next manager, but the organization is letting player progression and clubhouse morale dictate their decision. Despite widespread speculation that he would return to the front office, Andy Green is shedding the interim label and signing a three-year contract to become the full-time skipper. Marcus Semien shared some nice words that explain why the Mets are making this move.

“I’m glad they did,” the 2023 World Series champion and two-time Silver Slugger said regarding the Green news. “Everybody’s happy. Since Andy stepped in, he’s helped a lot of guys be a better version of themselves, and we’ve been playing a good brand of baseball. I’m happy we’re going to have that continuity moving forward, and I’m extremely happy for him and his family.”

Before a mid-September swoon, New York had temporarily escaped the National League East basement and leaped past the Washington Nationals for fourth place. Green’s 37-38 record as interim manager is not worth celebrating on the surface, but he has been forced to navigate a barrage of injuries and trade deadline departures. The Mets could have theoretically cratered even further after a demoralizing start to the campaign, but they instead showed a little life this past summer.

Individual player growth is possibly the biggest selling point for Green’s new managerial contract. Carson Benge has almost 160 hits and looks like a strong franchise building block, fellow rookie AJ Ewing has 24 stolen bases in just 114 games played, Tyrone Taylor posted an amazing July before being dealt to the Chicago Cubs, Jared Young filled in admirably at first base before suffering a season-ending head injury, Christian Scott and Zac Thornton have emerged as key members of the starting rotation and Nolan McLean has impressed as the team’s ace.

If this promising crop of young talent can continue to blossom and complement established stars like Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette, then a competitive 2027 season should be attainable. It would be nice if Marcus Semien could also produce — batting .219 with a .626 OPS entering Tuesday — but it sounds like New York at least has a vocal leader who can further communicate Andy Green’s message to the clubhouse.

Fresh off this big news, the Mets (71-85) will try to play the spoiler role and impede the Texas Rangers’ path to the playoffs. Perhaps a warm welcome from the Arlington crowd can help fuel Semien for the rest of the season.
