Ohio State football is one of the best teams in college football this season, and Ryan Day’s squad is still ranked firmly in the top 10 despite blowing a 20-point lead to Texas in Week 2. Despite that, the Buckeyes are still on track to roll through the Big Ten and make a run at the College Football Playoff.

A lot of the optimism around this Ohio State team comes back to star quarterback Julian Sayin. Sayin was one of the most accurate and efficient quarterbacks in all of college football in 2025, and he is back for more this fall. Some pundits doubt Sayin, and his projection as an NFL prospect in particular, because of his size and limited playmaking ability with his athleticism.
On Tuesday, Day fired back at Sayin’s doubters by comparing the way he operates and his style to that of Tom Brady, via Patrick Murphy of 247 Sports.

“Day said all of Ohio State’s quarterbacks have the ability to make plays with their feet, but sort of pushed back on the idea that running is the only way to be a playmaker,” Murphy reported on X, formerly Twitter. “He pointed to Tom Brady and how he was different than Lamar Jackson, but both moved their teams down the field and scored points.”
Sayin does most of his work from the pocket, but he is still hyper-efficient and has led one of the best offenses in college football during his time as the starter. So far this season, the junior is completing over 70% of his passes with 839 yards, six touchdowns and an interception in three games. He also found the end zone once on the ground.
Sayin and the Buckeyes get Big Ten play underway on Saturday when they welcome Illinois to The Shoe in Columbus. That should be little trouble for him and the Buckeyes, but there are plenty of big road tests on the horizon in Iowa, Indiana, and USC before they host Oregon and Michigan later in the season.
