Benton’s Sam Ivins wins Shreveport Times Athlete of the Week 1 poll

Benton’s Sam Ivins garnered enough votes to win the seventh annual Shreveport Times online poll for Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission and Silmon and Cosse Orthodontics.

A cross country standout for the Tigers, Irvins made a strong run in winning the non-football poll for the 2024-25 school year. He joins past winners that include Benton’s Claire Allen and Brody Hutchison, along with Caddo Magnet’s Elena Pizarro and Calvary’s Jackson Burney.
Irvins received 21,129 votes (47.4%) of the 45,743 votes cast in the online poll to top second-place finisher Jaliyah Brown of North DeSoto cheer, who finished with 17,916 votes (40.2%).
Irvins will receive a backpack, a boxed lunch combo and some additional swag courtesy of Raising Cane’s and Cosse and Silmon.
"Sam is a driven young man who is constantly looking for ways to improve his running game," Benton coach Bryson Matthews said. "He works hard day in and day out to reach his goals and is a valuable asset to the Benton High cross country team."
Irvins was chosen because of his performance the previous week or because his name was submitted by his coach. The Times poll is posted each week at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football.
The Times online only poll runs through midnight Thursday. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, powerlifting, indoor and outdoor track, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, bowling, gymnastics and fishing while those sports are in season.
