The fall for the Detroit Lions has been precipitous. From running roughshod over the NFC to finishing last in their own division, few saw this turn of events coming. Unfortunately, the 2026 season doesn’t seem to have improved things for them yet.

After barely escaping with an overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, they were thoroughly dominated in Week 2 by the Buffalo Bills. As a result, some fans want the franchise to move on from head coach Dan Campbell.
Dan Campbell Bearing The Brunt of Lions’ Collapse
The Lions seemed like the hot new team back in 2023. After a stellar end to the 2022 campaign, they announced their arrival with a win over the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.
What followed was a 12-win season that came to an end in the NFC Championship Game. The next year, they improved further, jumping to 15 wins, but a ghastly playoff outing saw them lose to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round.
Last year was another step in the wrong direction, as they won nine games and failed to make the playoffs. Now, with the defense in shambles and the offense lacking a serious punch, the blowout loss to the Bills has forced panic among Lions fans.
“When are the Lions gonna fire Dan Campbell? He’s obviously regressing as a coach, and they are wasting years on Gibbs and St. Brown,” one fan wondered after the 41-31 loss.
For others, the lack of offensive brilliance, particularly in the first half when they managed just 10 points against a porous Bills defense, was the nail in the coffin.

One fan remarked, “Welp. It’s time to sit down and admit. Dan Campbell might just be an over-caffeinated, Ben Johnson merchant.”
The situation became doubly worse with the Chicago Bears winning the NFC North last year and starting the season by dropping 59 points in Week 1. For some fans, though, the problems went beyond the offense and Campbell alone.
“At what point do you fire Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell? They did a lot for the Lions organization, but it’s obvious that they’ll never get over the hump. Their job security is obviously not infinite, especially since it seems like they’re regressing every year.”
Another fan had similar feelings about the state of the team, but he took a far harsher approach to summarize their tenure.

“Fire all of them. Campbell, Holmes, and both Coordinators. I don’t understand why so many Lions fans are good with being mediocre. They never won [expletive]. Y’all get emotional about Campbell because he cried at the podium. Smh.”
As one fan claimed, “Fire Dan Campbell!” others already had a replacement in mind.
Some believe Mike Tomlin could be the fix that the Lions need. “Mike Tomlin is unemployed, just saying,” one fan pointed out, while another fan added, “Don’t have to call him. Fire Campbell and go hire Tomlin. He’s a free agent, right?”
It remains to be seen if the Lions will take some drastic measures after a slow start to the year. The defensive concerns, particularly in a secondary that had to part ways with Terrion Arnold and is missing Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, were well-known to the team.
But their inability to overcome those woes, or find potential fixes for it have been alarming. Now, in a loaded division, the early returns have raised major question marks about what the team can do.
