LSU women's basketball legend earns statue on LSU campus

Former LSU women's basketball star Sylvia Fowles will have her own statue on campus, according to a university release on Wednesday. She will be the second female student-athlete to have a statue erected in her honor, following fellow former Tiger and current women's basketball coach Seimone Augustus.

Fowles also joins the likes of fellow LSU basketball greats. Bob Pettit, Shaquille O'Neil and Pete Maravich all have statues outside the PMAC. That is where Fowles' statue with be build. Her jersey was retired in 2017, one of 16 athletes or coaches to receive the honor, and she was inducted into the LSU hall of fame in 2015.

A two-time All-American center at LSU, Fowles led the program, to four consecutive Final Four appearances from 2005 and 2008. She ended her final season in Baton Rouge as the National Defensive Player of the Year and the SEC Player of the Year. She ranks No. 4 on the program's all-time leading scorers list with 2,234 points.

Fowles excelled at the professional and international levels. She won two WNBA championships and was named the MVP for both finals. As part of Team USA, she won three Olympic gold medals and one FIBA World Championship gold medal. Fowles currently holds an assistant coach role with the Portland Fire.
