Canada will not call up Alphonso Davies for the international break to give him chance to go on a honeymoon
· Yahoo Sports
Yes, dear reader, Alphonso Davies is now married. He and singer Sheyenne Jen decided to tie the knot and got married in late July 2026, holding the ceremony in a castle near Paris. Nigerian music superstar Mr. P. performed at the party, teammate Jamal Musiala attended, and it seemed like a good time was had by all.
But the next step, the honeymoon, never truly happened. It seems the couple did not have the time and Davies had to prepare for the upcoming season with Bayern Munich. Instead, it seems they will be taking said honeymoon during the upcoming international break. Canada officially revealed this in a recent release (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) and head coach Jesse Marsch explained the rationale behind letting their star player go at this time:

Alphonso Davies has not been called up for Canada’s squad for the upcoming friendlies. Canada Soccer said in a release that Davies was “unavailable for selection due to the celebration of his marriage and honeymoon”
Jesse Marsch: “Alphonso wanted to be here, and we wanted him in this camp, but he got married shortly after the World Cup. The World Cup was also a lot going on with him and dealing with himself physically. We talked about does he go on a honeymoon for half the camp and then come in with us, and so I just felt like for him to get his honeymoon sorted, and then continue to keep moving in his physical state and form was important. He’s playing really well and looking really fit and feeling really good, so we just wanted to make sure in all ways that come November, when we need him to be ready for some meaningful matches, and then going into March, and then into this whole next cycle, that in all ways he sets himself up to be ready to commit fully always to what we need from him for the national team.”
BFW Analysis
Of course, Davies and Jen deserve to have their honeymoon and enjoy it to their fullest extent. But Canada will miss him all the same. They will face Chile, Peru and the USA in three consecutive friendlies during the international break. Despite the fixture not being competitive, Canada would love to get a victory over neighbors USA and will miss their captain in their quest to do so.
One hopes Canada fans will not be too upset at Davies missing the trip, either. He got a lot of flak for not participating much in the 2026 World Cup and missing the extended international break after that will not go down well with those critics. If he stays fit, Davies’ first regular international break with Canada since his ACL injury will be in November of 2026. Ideally he can bed back in with the team enough to prepare for the Gold Cup in 2027.
In the meantime, enjoy the trip and time off with your special someone, Davies.
