Not just Baleba: Man Utd receive another boost as injured star returns to grass training
· Yahoo Sports
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick could soon be able to rely on Matthijs de Ligt for the first time since his appointment.
The defender last played in November, when Ruben Amorim was still in charge at Carrington. He has been dealing with an agonising injury ordeal that has kept him out of action for the last 10 months.

The Dutchman tried to make his return to action on multiple occasions last season, but since his back pain persisted, he eventually succumbed to surgery, going under the knife in May.

While De Ligt’s operation was successful, his recovery process has been relatively slow. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old has been showing promising signs as of late.
In his latest update for Manchester United’s Round Table, Carrington insider Sully revealed that De Ligt is back to grass training. This is considered a significant step on his path towards full recovery.
As the source explains, Man Utd players were given the day off following the disappointing 0-1 defeat to Man City in Sunday’s Derby, but De Ligt was spotted at the club’s training facility, where he had a personalised session on the grass.
Sully also confirms that Carlos Baleba is making progress in his own recovery path, as he aims to make a return to action against Leeds United on October 18.
The same goes for Amad Diallo, who has been out of action since the start of the season. However, the Ivorian’s timetable remains unclear.
Why De Ligt’s return could be vital for Man Utd
Prior to his injury, De Ligt was arguably Man Utd’s most reliable defender last term under Amorim. When Carrick arrived, he was able to forge a solid partnership between Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, but it will be interesting to see how the former Ajax captain will cope under the 45-year-old.
When De Ligt is back in action, United will also have an extra body at the back, which would give Carrick more room to manoeuvre.

With five centre-backs at his disposal, the coach would be able to convert one or two to full-back, which remains the squad’s main Achilles’ heel.
Leny Yoro was deployed at right-back in pre-season, so the idea could be revisited, allowing Noussair Mazraoui to switch to the left flank whenever Luke Shaw needs support.
