Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway could be forced to miss an important opportunity to regain some confidence in Week 2.

Lagway suffered a high-ankle sprain during Baylor’s season-opening loss to Auburn and is considered doubtful for Saturday’s matchup against Prairie View A&M, according to On3.

“Sources tell On3 that quarterback DJ Lagway suffered a high ankle sprain in the loss to Auburn. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda said earlier this week that the quarterback is day-to-day, and a source told On3 later in the week that Lagway has been trying to fight through it. Sources have said the quarterback is viewed as doubtful against Prairie View A&M, especially with Big 12 playing starting in two weeks against Colorado.”

Considering the opponent and Baylor’s upcoming schedule, sitting Lagway might be the smart decision. The timing is unfortunate, though.

Lagway could have benefited from another game after an inconsistent performance against Auburn. He completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception as Baylor fell 17-16.

The Bears had an opportunity to force overtime after scoring a touchdown in the final seconds but instead attempted a two-point conversion for the win. The attempt failed, sending Baylor home with a frustrating season-opening loss.

Lagway was at least able to finish the game despite suffering the ankle injury. It’s fair to wonder whether his health played any role in Baylor’s decision to attempt the two-point conversion rather than potentially extending the game into overtime, although Aranda hasn’t indicated that was the case.

Now Baylor’s priority should be getting its quarterback healthy. Prairie View A&M would have presented Lagway with an opportunity to settle in and build some momentum after a difficult opener. Instead, his development could temporarily be put on hold.

The Bears host Louisiana Tech next weekend before opening Big 12 play against Colorado on Sept. 26.
