Gauteng weather: What to expect as the week gets underway

Johannesburg residents can expect a cold start to the week, with conditions likely to remain cloudy and unsettled before improving from Tuesday afternoon.
SAWS forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said Gauteng could see thunderstorms on Monday afternoon, with a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers.
A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms is in place for southern Gauteng and surrounding areas.
Thobela warned that the storms could bring heavy downpours, localised flooding, damaging winds and hail.
“We do have a Yellow Level 2 warning of severe thunderstorms, which may result in heavy downpours that lead to localised flooding, as well as the possibility of damaging winds and hail into the afternoon.”
Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should take precautions and remain alert during periods of heavy rain.
Conditions to improve from Tuesday
Monday is expected to bring the most significant thunderstorm activity to Gauteng, but conditions should gradually settle from Tuesday.
Thobela said the chance of showers and thundershowers would fall to 30% on Tuesday across parts of the north-eastern provinces, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.
“Conditions are expected to start to improve from Tuesday, with just a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers expected to cover most parts of the north-eastern areas, which will impact Gauteng.”
By Wednesday, most of the country will see more settled weather conditions, with little significant rainfall expected.
More severe weather in other provinces
The unsettled conditions form part of a broader cold and cloudy spell affecting central and eastern South Africa.
Several provinces, including the Free State, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo, will see scattered to widespread rain and showers.
Severe thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, localised flooding, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.
While Gauteng faces a Yellow Level 2 warning on Monday, an Orange Level 6 warning remains in place for severe thunderstorms over the Free State and eastern parts of the Northern Cape.
