Iowa football names Sedrick Shaw honorary captain for season opener

· Yahoo Sports

Ahead of Iowa football's 2026 season opener against Northern Illinois at Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes named legendary running back Sedrick Shaw as their Week 1 honorary captain.

The Austin, Texas, native is the only Hawkeye to rush for 1,000-plus yards in three consecutive seasons and one of only four players to have multiple 1,000-yard campaigns. To this day, Shaw holds Iowa’s career records for rushing yards (4,156), rushing touchdowns (33), rushing attempts (837), and career 100-yard games (19).

Shaw closed out his career ranking in the top 10 in program history with 214 points, and he has the second-most all-purpose yards (4,974) all-time. Twice in his career, Shaw eclipsed the 200-yard mark on the ground, as he rushed for 250 yards at Michigan State in 1995 and 214 yards at Wisconsin in 1995.

During his four years in Iowa City from 1993-96, Shaw led the Hawkeyes to three bowl games and two bowl victories. In those two bowl wins, he earned the MVP of Iowa’s 38-18 win over Washington in the 1995 Sun Bowl and the Offensive MVP in the team’s 27-0 victory over Texas Tech in the 1996 Alamo Bowl.

Shaw was named a first-team All-Big Ten selection and team captain in 1996. He was Iowa's Most Valuable Player in 1995 and 1996. The New England Patriots selected him in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft, where he would go on to play three professional seasons.

This is not the first time Shaw has held the weekly distinction. He was previously the honorary captain in 2012 during Iowa’s 31-13 Floyd of Rosedale victory over Minnesota.

Shaw, who will be inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend, will accompany the Iowa captains to midfield for Saturday’s pregame coin toss and be with the team in the locker room before and after the game.

Iowa and Northern Illinois will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 3:15 p.m. CT, with the game broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
