Travers 2026: The Players Who Bet Against Golden Tempo And Renegade

Here’s the punchline right at the top: Contrarian wisdom, as a cognitive human – aka, non-AI – product, can, also, simply be called “wisdom.” Why? Because the world, very much including the world of horse racing – is a topsy-turvy joint, and we must live with the possibility that any bit of wisdom assessing the outcome of an event can be upended (by that event). Contrarian wisdom is simply wisdom applied to the proposition that all things may not turn out as we thought. In particular, say some, that means Saturday’s $1.25 million Travers, and that means Golden Tempo.

Which brings us to the always-entertaining progenitors of “fair odds” in racing. In his own eponymous, witty Fair Odds column at Horse Racing Nation, no less a handicapper than the former Churchill Downs marketing director and current vice-president for HRN’s product and content development, Ed DeRosa, serenely goes about the near-total destruction of the NYRA’s morning line for the 2026 running of the Grade 1 k$1.25-million Travers Stakes, the capstone of the summer in horse-racing America. Suffice it to say, this bit of pre-race handicapping is hilarious and sobering at once.

But before we get into what DeRosa and his rival oddsmakers in London are saying about tomorrow’s race, here, a refresher on the field and the morning line.
