Observations and standouts from Buffalo’s 31-7 win over Cleveland

Backup quarterback Kyle Allen has made the most of his preseason opportunities, turning in two impressive performances in wins over the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns.

On Saturday, in Buffalo’s second preseason contest, Allen might have clinched the backup job, completing 10 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a nine-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman Jr. right before the end of the first half as the Bills took a 14-7 lead into halftime.

Allen lofted a perfect deep ball to receiver Ja’Mori Maclin for a 37-yard gain that set up the Allen to Hardman score, who continued his strong preseason by catching a pair of passes for 108 yards in the win, while Ian Wheeler (56 yards) and Frank Gore Jr. (54 yards) combined to rush for 110 yards on their 23 carries, though Gore did have a fumble. Damar Hamlin and Te’Cory Couch (pictured below) each added interceptions as Jim Leonhard’s defense held the Browns scoreless over the final 48 minutes of the game.

What else stood out from the win? Defensive end Landon Jackson was a disruptive force in the backfield; rookie outside linebacker had several impressive pass-rushing reps; cornerback Jordan Hancock came up with a huge pass breakup on a third-down play; veteran Trent Sherfield caught all four of his targets for 54 yards and was Buffalo’s best receiver in the first half; left guard Alec Anderson earned the first-team reps over Austin Corbett; and Hamlin led the team with five tackles to go with his interception.
