Klay Thompson left the Golden State Warriors to compete at the highest level. He joined the Dallas Mavericks immediately after they made the NBA Finals, but then the Luka Doncic trade changed everything.

While the Mavs did get Cooper Flagg and still have Kyrie Irving, it has been evident for a while that Thompson wouldn’t be staying for long.

On Thursday, it was announced that the player and the team had reached an agreement to buy Klay out. Immediately after, reports emerged about his plan to join the Miami Heat.

Klay Thompson is set to sign a two-year, $13 million deal with the Miami Heat

When Thompson clears waivers, he will become a free agent. The Miami Heat have long been mentioned as a landing spot, and reports suggest that a deal is already in place.

Some fans thought the 4-time champion might join the Los Angeles Lakers, but it seems the Heat want to add him alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. Shams Charania reported the details of the deal.

“Klay Thompson plans to sign a two-year, nearly $13 million deal with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers, with a player option in the second season,” Charania reported on X.

The player option in his second year is interesting. If things don’t work out in Miami for Thompson, this means he could be a free agent again during the next offseason.

For now, it’s safe to say that his time with the Mavericks didn’t go quite as planned. Klay will be hoping that Miami will be better to him than Dallas ended up being.
