About Browns QB Shedeur Sanders: ‘I’d sleep like a baby if I got to play him every week’

Is the above comment about Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders a strong one to title this piece? Of course it is. Is it accurate? At least it is what one defensive coordinator believes.
The Browns QB competition is off and running. All we know, according to HC Todd Monken, is that a lot of things still have to be installed in Week 2’s schedule and QB Dillon Gabriel has earned more reps. Day 5 was a lot like the previous days at Cleveland’s training camp, with a few exciting plays and a lot of concern about the quarterback play.

From the outside looking in, the Browns quarterback room does not have a lot of believers. In Mike Sando’s annual QB tiers article, with 50 executives and coaches ranking 35 veteran quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson was ranked 31st, with Sanders a few slots behind at 35th, last overall.
Both were in the lowest tier of the rankings.
The comment that jumped out about Watson was about as negative as the one on Sanders that we titled this piece with:
“I don’t think he can come back,” an offensive coach said. “You do not all of a sudden get drive and desire and processing skills. He showed he had none of that with what he put on film. He’s a 5 (lowest tier ranking) at this point.”
Important to note that one voter believes so much in Monken that he put Watson in Tier 2, at least that is the assumption Sando noted.
The Sanders write-up is a bit longer for NY Times subscribers, but is led by the above quote from a defensive coordinator. It wasn’t all negative, however, as there are notes of hope:
“If Shedeur has really invested in himself to be a professional quarterback, studying the playbook and knowing his assignments and being able to get the offense in and out of the huddle at an efficient clip, which he could not do last year, then there might be some upside,” the voter said.
With one head coach actually adding praise, not just hope:
“I thought he was all right, better than expected,” this coach said. “They did a good job with him of making the game simple. And I thought Shedeur played with a chip on his shoulder.”
In the end, the rankings are about what the quarterbacks have done. Now, under Monken with a new offensive system, line, and set of weapons, Watson and Sanders have a chance to change the narrative about their talents. If not, 17 weeks of good sleep are coming for different defensive coordinators.
