Cristian Romero’s exit from Tottenham Hotspur this summer is but a matter of formality. He is also ever closer to sealing his next destination, with Inter ready to conclude negotiations.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Romero and the Nerazzurri remain quite some distance apart in terms of salary expectations. The World Cup-winning Argentina international wants €6 million per year in wages, but Inter are as of yet unwilling to match that.
Spurs and Inter are clear on transfer fee. A package of €40 million has been agreed. Inter have also earmarked Frenchman Benjamin Pavard as a possible departee should they get Romero over the line.
Atlético Madrid, long-time admirers of Romero, remain at the periphery of this saga, looking to make a move if the talks with Inter ultimately collapse.
There is a second reason too and it pertains to outgoings. Benjamin Pavard’s exit determines everything. If the Frenchman stays, a deal for Romero would become complex.
A deal very much possible
It is remarkable that a player Daniel Levy had put a triple-figure price tag on no more than two seasons ago may be on the move for the less than €50 million despite three years remaining on his Spurs contract.
Romero may want to leave Tottenham Hotspur, and the club may also have accepted the writing on the wall and decided to plan ahead without him, but the Argentine remains a world-class defenders despite his antics and would absolutely improve what has largely been an ageing defence Inter are trying to rebuild.
Despite their haggling, Inter will be aware of how good a deal they’re getting, as well as how crucial someone of Romero profile is as far as their rebuilding plans are concerned. €6 million per year will hardly break their wage structure, with Lautaro Martinez earning €9 million per year currently.
This may take a while longer, but it’s likely Inter will accept Romero’s wage demands.
