A rain delay halted the Philadelphia Phillies vs. Baltimore Orioles rubber match Sunday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, at 2:28 p.m. ET, after first pitch went off on schedule at 1:35 p.m. ET.

UPDATE: Rain stared to fall again in the 6th inning. Radar showed a major storm system zeroing in on Camden Yards. “This game is official right? Let’s just go ahead and call it a night,” wrote sports meteorologist Kevin Roth at about 5:15 p.m. ET.

At 5:20 p.m. the tarp came out again and the game went into a second delay. With the Phillies leading 8-0, the game was likely over but that decision had not been made yet.

“e have entered another rain delay here at The Yard,” the Orioles posted at 5:20 p.m. “We will update with more information as it becomes available.”

The Phillies led 2-0 at the time of the stoppage, on a home run by Bryan De La Cruz off of Orioles starter Kyle Bradish in the top of the third.

An AccuWeather forecast showed rain letting up at about 3:15 p.m., resuming at about 3:35 then subsiding for the rest of the day at 3:48. If that forecast held, the grounds crew should start preparing the field after a delay of one hour and 20 minutes, with players taking the field probably around 4:05, give or take.

And in fact, at 4 p.m. the Orioles announced that the game would resume at 4:15. The announcement of the restart time was confirmed by the Orioles via social media moments later.

“Part of the issue the Phillies and Orioles are facing is that the teams do not share a single off-day the rest of the season,” reported Shaun Nestor of Philadelphia SportsNet. “If they can’t get this game at least through the 5th inning today, then it would have to be moved to September 28, the day after the regular season ends.”

The rain delay was only the second for the Orioles this season, and first to pause action once a game had already started.

The teams played through a downpour for the first 2 1/2 innings, but were unable to start the bottom of the third after the grounds crew attempted to dry the infield.
