Charlotte Knights 12, Nashville Sounds 5
The Knights (57-47) beat the Sounds (56-48) handily in Nashville, and have been on fire to start the series.
Tyler Gilbert opened by pitching an inning, and Joe Rock followed by pitching exactly one inning. Gilbert and Rock allowed one run each, so the Knights trailed by a pair after two. However, they did not stay down for long. In the third, with one out, Rikuu Nishida walked, and Ryan Galanie launched his 16th homer in 71 games with the Knights to tie the game at two.

The Sounds retook the lead on a solo homer in the bottom of the third off Jonathan Cannon. Despite that, Cannon lasted six innings, and that was the only run he allowed. On top of that, the Knights offense was not messing around in the top of the fourth.
Caden Connor tripled, Nolan Jones singled, Eric Haase singled to tie the game, and Mario Camilletti grounded into a force out that got the go-ahead run in. From there, Andy Weber reached on a catcher’s interference, and Nishida walked to load the bases. Galanie singled to bring home a pair, and Michael Turner blew the game wide open with a three-run blast. Turner’s eighth homer of the season capped off a seven-run inning, and the Knights did not look back. The Knights picked up their last three runs on a bases-clearing double by Haase in the sixth.

Birmingham Barons 7, Chattanooga Lookouts 6
The Barons (38-60) won a chaotic, back-and-forth matchup against the Lookouts (48-50), and they have won the first two games of the series.
This game got off to a rough start, with starter Lucas Gordon struggling with control. Gordon issued six walks, and only 41 of his 83 pitches were strikes. As a result, it felt like a small victory that the Lookouts only scored three runs against Gordon in 4 1/3 innings. When Gordon left the game, the Barons trailed by a score of 3-1. That run scored in the bottom of the fourth, when Caleb Bonemer crushed a home run to lead off the frame.
The Lookouts picked up an insurance run in the top of the sixth to extend their lead back to three. However, Bonemer and the Barons did not go away. After a single by Boston Smith, Bonemer hit another home run. That was Bonemer’s eighth in 31 games with Birmingham and his 26th in 92 games overall. Bonemer posted a .937 OPS with the Dash, and his OPS with the Barons (.931) is nearly identical.
The Barons pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh, when Colby Shelton, Ryan Burrowes, and Dylan Campbell hit three consecutive singles. Campbell’s single tied the game, and they were not done. Adam Fogel walked to load the bases, and Brenden Dixon drew a walk to force in a run. Smith grounded into a force out at home, but Bonemer drew a walk to force in another run.
After Barons reliever Jackson Kelley pitched a scoreless eighth, he ran into trouble in the ninth. Kelley allowed two runs, as he was unable to put the game away. The game headed into the bottom of the ninth with the score tied at six. With one out, Dixon drew a walk and stole second, and although Smith struck out, the stage was set for Bonemer, who drew an intentional walk. Of course.
So, the stage was set for Alec Briley, who hit a deep fly ball that landed on the warning track for a walk-off double. What a game.

Brooklyn Cyclones 8, Winston-Salem Dash 6
The Dash (54-44) offense had another good evening, but the bullpen did not get the job done in a high-scoring, heartbreaking loss to Brooklyn (40-56).
In the top of the first, Javier Mogollón, the game’s second batter, lined a double. That set the stage for Jeral Perez, who doubled to center to drive in the game’s first run.
The Dash went back to work in the third, when Mogollón and Perez drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Although George Wolkow struck out, a throwing error allowed Mogollón to advance to third. With runners on the corners and one out, a productive ground out by James Taussig was enough to get Mogollón home. From there, Kyle Lodise blasted his 13th homer of the season, and suddenly, the score was 4-0.
Dash starter Justin Sinibaldi did an excellent job of limiting sharp contact. Sinibaldi scattered three harmless hits across five shutout innings. Sinibaldi only struck out one, and he issued three walks, but he pitched around the walks without any issues.
When Sinibaldi left the game, the Dash had a 4-0 lead, but the road got bumpy as soon as the bullpen took over. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cyclones scored four runs on four hits against reliever Seth Keener.
The Dash did not simply roll over after that ugly inning. In the seventh, Taussig put the Dash ahead with a solo homer. That was Taussig’s 14th homer in 39 games with the Dash and his 21st homer in 75 games overall.
In the top of the ninth, Mogollón added an insurance run with a solo blast of his own. Mogollón was just promoted from Kannapolis to Winston-Salem on Tuesday, so this was his first homer with his new team, and it made the score 6-4.
Dash reliever Garrett Wright entered the game in pursuit of the save. Wright issued a leadoff walk, but he retired the next two batters he faced. However, the Cyclones were relentless, and with two outs, Randy Guzman drove in a run with a single to pull within one run. Jamari Baylor extended the game with a single to bring the potential tying run into scoring position. From there, Daiverson Gutierrez crushed a come-from-behind, walk-off three-run homer.

Salem RidgeYaks 7, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 2 (7 innings, Game 1)
After getting rained out on Tuesday, the Cannon Ballers (48-49) came out flat for the first game of the doubleheader against Salem (42-54).
Cannon Ballers starter Truman Pauley did not have his best stuff on the mound. Pauley allowed two doubles and a homer in the top of the first. After the blast, the score was 3-0, and the RidgeYaks did not cough up that lead. As it turned out, those three runs alone would have been enough to hold off the Cannon Ballers.
In the bottom of the second, Stiven Flores reached on an error, Nick McLain laid down a good bunt for a single, and Alexander Albertus walked. Just like that, Kannapolis had the bases loaded with no outs. From there, Steven Lancia hit a sacrifice fly to put the Cannon Ballers on the board, but Albertus was tagged out trying to advance to second. When Albertus was thrown out, the rare sacrifice double play was completed.
An RBI single by Albertus in the bottom of the sixth brought home the second run for Kannapolis. However, by that point, the game was out of reach.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 1, Salem RidgeYaks 0 (7 innings, Game 2)
The Cannon Ballers (49-49) climbed back up to .500 on the season with a .500 day against Salem (42-55).
The Cannon Ballers scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth, which Matthew Boughton opened with a leadoff walk. Boughton proceeded to steal yet another base, and he has stolen 20 bases in 26 attempts (76.9%) this season. Boughton advanced to third on a ground out by Nick McLain, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson Fermin.
Meanwhile, the pitching staff was outstanding. Starter Gabriel Rodriguez pitched four shutout innings without allowing any hits. Blaine Wynk shut it down with three shutout innings to secure the close victory.
