Conine puts Marlins ahead for good with eighth inning pinch-hit homer, Marlins defeat Phillies 8-6

MIAMI (AP) — Griffin Conine hit a go-ahead pinch-hit homer in the eighth, Otto Lopez, Heriberto Hernández and Xavier Edwards each had two RBIs, and the Miami Marlins rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-6 on Wednesday.

The Marlins overcame a 6-0 deficit to mark their largest comeback of the season. They had previously rallied from four runs down on May 9 against the Nationals, and have come back 21 times this year.
Lopez got the Marlins on the board in the fifth, grounding out but driving in Esteury Ruiz to make it 6-1. Hernández then sent a high changeup from Jesús Luzardo 416 feet to left-center to get the Fightin’ Fish within three.
Lopez drove in another with a single in the seventh and Edwards drove in two more with a single of his own to tie the game at 6-all.
Marlins starter Ryan Gusto worked five innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. Tyler Zuber (1-1) took the win in relief, and Pete Fairbanks earned his 15th save
DIAMONDBACKS 3, PIRATES 0
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Eduardo Rodríguez pitched eight shutout innings, Gabriel Moreno hit a two-run homer and Arizona beat Pittsburgh, clinching the three-game series.
Arizona (57-52) now sits two games up on the Pirates (55-54) for the final NL wild card.
Rodríguez (10-3) struck out two while giving up five hits on 105 pitches before Brandyn Garcia closed out a hitless ninth inning for his second save of the year.
The loss marked the fifth straight against a left-handed opener for Pittsburgh, while Diamondbacks starters gave up zero earned runs in 20 2/3 innings pitched this series.
Moreno scored the game’s first runs, smashing a slider 407 feet into the lawn past the center-field wall. With the hit, he extended his on-base streak to 26 consecutive games.
BLUE JAYS 5, NATIONALS 2
WASHINGTON (AP) — Trey Yesavage allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings, Kazuma Okamoto went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, and Toronto defeated Washington.
The Blue Jays improved to 13-18-4 in series play and completed their six-game road trip at 3-3.
Yesavage (5-5) struck out four and walked three. The 23-year-old rookie worked his third quality start in his past five games and lowered his ERA to 3.73.
The Nats got on the board first thanks to Jacob Young’s RBI double in the fourth.
Ernie Clement hit an RBI double in the sixth to drive in George Springer, and Daulton Varsho singled to bring Okamoto across in the seventh.
ORIOLES 10, TIGERS 9, 12 INNINGS
DETROIT (AP) — Colton Cowser hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th inning, capping the Baltimore Orioles’ rally from a seven-run deficit to beat the Tigers 10-9 on Wednesday and spoil Tarik Skubal’s possible farewell to Detroit.
Fans gave Skubal, a hot target ahead of Monday’s trade deadline, several standing ovations while he took a shutout into the seventh inning, but Baltimore pounced on the Tigers’ bullpen. The O’s trailed 7-0 after six innings and had been outscored 21-0 in the last 15 innings, but they scored five times in the seventh and twice in the eighth.
Baltimore scored twice in the 11th, but Detroit’s Spencer Torkelson answered with a two-run homer — the 100th of his career — on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning.
Cowser’s two-out grounder up the middle put Baltimore up 10-9 in the 12th, and Grant Wolfram (4-2) got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning.
GIANTS 16, BREWERS 3
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Luis Arraez had four of San Francisco’s 17 hits, Daniel Susac hit his first two homers in the majors and the Giants routed the Brewers.
Arraez had four singles in five at-bats, raising his batting average to a majors-leading .331. The three-time batting champ drove in two runs.
Logan Webb (6-7) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. He’s 6-0 in nine career starts against the Brewers with a 1.92 ERA.
Susac opened the scoring in the second inning with a three-run homer off Thomas Pannone (0-1). Milwaukee selected Pannone from Triple-A Nashville to make the start.
The Giants broke open what had been a 3-2 game with a seven-run sixth inning off relievers Chad Patrick and Aaron Ashby.
PADRES 3, ROCKIES 1
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jackson Merrill, Luis Rengifo and Gavin Sheets had RBIs Griffin Canning and five relievers turned in a strong bullpen outing as San Diego beat Colorado to take both games of the short series.
The Padres (54-53) extended their winning streak to five games and moved to two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the final NL wild card.
Canning (2-9) worked three innings and allowed one hit while striking out four. Kyle Hart started and posted his longest outing of the season, working 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Wandy Peralta allowed the Rockies’ only run in the seventh.
Bradgley Rodriguez, Jeremiah Estrada — making his first appearance since June 2 — and Mason Miller allowed just one hit down the stretch. Miller earned his 28th save of the season in a one-hit ninth.
RAYS 3, RANGERS 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Yandy Diaz and Ryan Vilade homered in the first inning and five pitchers combined for a four-hitter as Tampa Bay beat Texas.
Ian Seymour (7-3) allowed just two hits in 4 2/3 innings of bulk relief behind opener Casey Legumina, who allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Garret Cleavinger pitched out of a seventh-inning jam, and Kevin Kelly struck out the side in the eighth.
Bryan Baker converted his 19th consecutive save and 29th overall with a scoreless final inning to close out the ninth shutout this season for AL East-leading Tampa Bay. It was the Rays’ third shutout in four games.
Texas starter MacKenzie Gore (6-9) allowed three hits and struck out nine in seven innings, retiring 20 of the final 21 batters he faced. The Rangers held the Rays without a hit for the final 7 2/3 innings.
GUARDIANS 6, REDS 1
CINCINNATI (AP) — Kyle Manzardo homered and drove in two runs, Joey Cantillo pitched four scoreless innings and Cleveland beat Cincinnati to claim the season series from their in-state rivals.
The Guardians, who took two of the three games from the Reds at Progressive Field in May, earned this year’s “Ohio Cup,” which is awarded to the winner of the season’s series.
Cantillo allowed four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. He leads the majors with a .189 opponents’ average with runners in scoring position and worked out of jams in the first, second, and fourth innings on Wednesday.
The Guardians, who had been shut out in three of the previous four games, loaded the bases with one out in the third, but failed to score. They loaded the bases again with no outs in the fifth and scored four runs despite having only one hit.
ROYALS 4, TWINS 0
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Randy Dobnak pitched seven scoreless innings for his first major league victory in five years as Kansas City beat Minnesota.
Dobnak (1-0) gave up four hits and a walk while striking out four. He had three 1-2-3 innings and no runner advanced past second base.
Dobnak hadn’t won a game in the big leagues since May 21, 2021, when he was with the Twins. He made 21 starts for Minnesota between 2019 and 2021, then spent most of the next four seasons pitching for Triple-A St. Paul before the Twins sent him to Detroit at last year’s trade deadline.
Tyler Tolbert doubled and homered and Salvador Perez had two hits, including his first triple since 2022.
METS 3, BRAVES 2, 1ST GAME

NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Sale struck out nine and limited New York to two hits in six innings and Atlanta beat the Mets to split a day/night doubleheader.
Sale (12-6) didn’t walk a batter. Raisel Iglesias, the Braves’ fourth pitcher, had his 22nd save with a perfect ninth.
Matt Olson had an RBI single in the sixth in the Braves’ first 1-0 victory over the Mets since a seven-inning win in the second game of a doubleheader June 21, 2021.
Olson also accounted for the Braves’ offense in the opener, when he hit a two-run homer in a 3-2 loss.
Christian Scott (3-3) gave up one run and struck out seven while throwing six innings — his longest stint since May 24, 2024. Scott underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2025 and pitched into the sixth just three times in his first 14 starts this year.
