Should the Jaguars Trade For Vita Vea?

Vita Vea, the 6'4, 347-pound defensive tackle who has spent his entire eight-season career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, requested a trade after negotiations on a contract extension apparently hit a snag on Monday.

Vea has been one of the most disruptive DTs in the league for a long time, but 18 others at the position are now paid more than his $17.75 million/year contract. Entering the final year of that deal, the 31-year-old was hoping to receive a new contract from the Bucs after staging a "hold-in" during the team's mandatory minicamp in June.

Jeffery Simmons reset the DT market by signing a three-year, $105.8 million extension with the Tennessee Titans last month. After being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals for the 10th overall pick in the draft, former New York Giants DT Dexter Lawrence had one year added to his contract for $28 million.

With all of the money being given to the big men in the middle this offseason, Vea wanted his share. While his standoff with the Bucs didn't seem very contentious, things took a turn for the worse on Monday, leading Vea to ask for a trade.

If Tampa gives in and makes Vea available, should the Jacksonville Jaguars trade for him?

Vea Could Be Final Piece

The Jaguars had the NFL's top run defense last season and are looking to be even better in 2026. Vea could be the final piece added to make Jacksonville's defense one of the very top units in the league. 

Having Vea line up somewhere between star edge rushers Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker would give the Jags an absolutely devastating defensive line. Vea would ensure the defense remains strong against the run and give the Jaguars some extra pass-rushing juice, something they lacked a year ago. He has recorded 23.5 sacks over the last four seasons, and his ability to collapse the pocket from the inside of the line is invaluable.

Vea also gets double-teamed at one of the highest rates in the NFL. His presence would force offenses to pay less attention to Hines-Allen and/or Walker, which could turn a pass rush that was mediocre a year ago into one that is lethal this season.

Does Jacksonville Need Vea?

"Need" may be a strong word, but Jacksonville would become much better if the team acquired Vea. 

The Jaguars currently have DaVon Hamilton and Arik Armstead as their starting DTs. Hamilton is a solid starter but offers very little in the pass-rushing department. Armstead is better at creating pressure, but he has never lived up to the big contract that brought him to Jacksonville, and rumors of his being released were common all offseason.

The Jaguars also spent a third-round pick on DT Albert Regis and traded for 2024 second-rounder Ruke Orhorhoro, who is looking to jumpstart his career with a change of scenery.

Jacksonville's DT group looks serviceable, but lacks anyone who even comes close to being the impact player Vea is.

The biggest challenge for a potential Vea trade is the salary cap. OverTheCap has the Jaguars with just about $8 million in cap space available, not enough to bring in Vea at his current salary.

However, no trade for Vea is going to happen unless his new team agrees to give him a new contract. If Jacksonville wants Vea, they could easily structure his new deal in a way that fits him into this year's cap space.

Final Thoughts

For a team like the Jaguars, trading for a player like Vea could be a game-changer. Despite winning 13 games a season ago, Jacksonville was unable to win a playoff game. Vea is the type of player who could change that.

The Jags have been heavily criticized all offseason for not being more aggressive in trying to add to their roster. Trading for Vea would immediately silence those critics. He would be a massive addition to the team, both literally and figuratively.

Trading for a 31-year-old with a lot of wear and tear on his body is risky, especially considering it would take away snaps from the young DTs Jacksonville needs to develop.

However, the positives of trading for Vea greatly outweigh the negatives. The Jaguars are trying to prove last season was no fluke and have hopes of making it to the team's first-ever Super Bowl this season.

Adding Vea would drastically improve their chances, especially in a division expected to be as competitive as the AFC South. The Jaguars and Houston Texans should be fighting for the division all year, with the Indianapolis Colts possibly a threat as well.

Trading for Vita Vea gives Jacksonville a much better chance at winning the battles it will be in and a better chance at achieving the goals the team has this season.
