‘Unnecessary’: Gayton criticised over Jayden Adams’ funeral speech

Gayton McKenzie has been criticised over his “unnecessary” and “irrelevant” speech at the funeral service of Jayden Adams on Saturday, 26 July in Stellenbosch.

The Minister of Sport was invited to address the group of mourners, which included the late Bafana Bafana’s family and friends, soccer colleagues and SAFA and Sundowns management.

Jayden is believed to have taken his own life earlier this month, just weeks after returning from the national team from the FIFA World Cup.

GAYTON MCKENZIE SLAMMED OVER JAYDEN ADAMS SPEECH

Gayto McKenzie was one of several prominent delegates who attended the funeral of Jayden Adams 

Others included SAFA President Danny Jordaan, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, and the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Sundowns FC, Patrice Motsepe.

Gayton kicked off his speech by sympathising with Jayden’s loved ones. He also used the opportunity to call out social media trolls who had blamed Jayden’s partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, for his shock death.

Thereafter, the minister was accused of going off on a tangent, speaking on topics like

  • Complimenting Patrice Motsepe’s wife, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, on her fashion sense and success. Commending Tlhopie Motsepe on being well-mannered and an astute businessman
  • Recalling how he once took his girlfriend to a party hosted by his pal, Kenny Kunene
  • Claiming that Bafana coach texted him that ‘I never used to like you’
  • Mocking Kaizer Chiefs for not winning a trophy for the last 2 decades
  • Calling out football “hooligans” who “used their R5 data to insult our players”

INSENSITIVE?

Gayton McKenzie was also criticised by the public after the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture posted a video of the minister looking into the casket of Jayden Adams.

In a statement a day earlier, the Adams family shared that only a select few would be permitted to view the body of the late player.

The family also prohibited the public from taking pictures or videos of the funeral for posting on social media.
