While the proposal offers an intriguing return, it also comes at an interesting time. Heading into Saturday, the Tigers remain just 3.5 games behind the final American League Wild Card spot, making the decision to trade one of their most dependable starters far more complicated.

From Chicago’s perspective, the fit is obvious.

Casey Mize Has Reestablished Himself
Mize has quietly become one of the Tigers’ biggest success stories.
After earning his first All-Star selection in 2025, the former No. 1 overall pick has taken another step forward this season. Through 14 starts, he owns a stellar 2.79 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 77.1 innings, giving Detroit quality starts nearly every time he takes the mound.
Those numbers explain why teams looking to strengthen their rotation would have significant interest if the Tigers ever made him available.
Why Detroit Would Listen
The proposed return isn’t insignificant.
Kevin Alcántara remains one of the Cubs’ highest upside position players. The athletic outfielder offers impressive raw power, plus speed, and the defensive tools to become an everyday player if everything comes together offensively.
Chicago would also include Brooks Caple, a 23 year old right handed pitching prospect who has enjoyed a strong season at Double A. With Detroit’s reputation for developing pitchers, Caple could become another intriguing arm in the organization’s pipeline.
For a club focused strictly on the future, it’s the type of package worth considering.
Why the Timing Doesn’t Add Up
The problem isn’t the return. It’s the standings.
The Tigers are still only 3.5 games out of the final American League Wild Card spot entering Saturday, meaning meaningful baseball remains well within reach. Trading one of the club’s best starters while remaining firmly in the postseason conversation would send a difficult message to both the clubhouse and the fan base.
Mize has become an integral part of Detroit’s rotation, and subtracting him would significantly weaken the team’s chances of making a late season run.
Even though Mize is eligible for free agency after the season, the Tigers could still attempt to negotiate a new contract this winter rather than move him for future assets.
Bottom Line
There’s little doubt Casey Mize would draw plenty of interest if Detroit made him available.
This proposal gives the Tigers two legitimate prospects in Kevin Alcántara and Brooks Caple, making it a thoughtful hypothetical. Still, unless Detroit falls further out of contention before the trade deadline, moving one of its most reliable starters seems difficult to justify.
For now, with a postseason berth still within striking distance, keeping Mize in the rotation appears to be the much more realistic path.
