Little Norway looking to make waves for Norway's World Cup game

The United States men's run in the World Cup ended on Monday, but that didn't mean soccer excitement in Kitsap had to end.

The same afternoon Gabrielle McGraw, owner of Red Plantation in Poulsbo and marketing and event chair of the Historic Downtown Poulsbo Association, knew it was time to answer a question she'd seen pop up on social media: What was "Little Norway" doing to celebrate the real Norway's World Cup run to the quarterfinals?

"I've been enjoying the vibes around FIFA, and how it's bringing people together," McGraw said. "I don't think we knew it would be as big as it has been."

So in a rapid blitz of networking and planning between the city and downtown businesses, Poulsbo's own "Viking Row" was pulled together for Saturday at noon, at Waterfront Park, to precede the 2 p.m. World Cup game between England and Norway. It'll be trying to mimic the viral movement and energy Norway's fans have brought to the country's first five World Cup games, where striker Ehrling Haaland and company electrified crowds by advancing to the quarterfinals with a win over Brazil -- celebrated by masses of fans "rowing" together. They'll play England at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, with a bid to the semifinals on the line.

McGraw said that Saturday's event in Poulsbo will start at noon, when the group of vikings who headline other community events will march down Front Street to the park. There community members may join in lining up on the lawn for a might "Row," just like has been done in the stands and outside stadium's during Norway games. It'll be filmed for a viral moment to share, and then everyone is encouraged to stick around at local establishments and watch the game.

Her advice to anyone who wants to come row: "Wear as much red as possible."

The Sip, Brass Kraken, Valholl Brewery, Poulsbo Wood Fired Pizza, The Skal House Pub, State 42 and the new Aiger's Public House will all have screens going for the game, McGraw said.

"As the businesses downtown, we need this, we've needed some fun," McGraw said.
