Michigan State Ex-Athletic Director Officially Leaving for Kentucky Later This Month
· Yahoo Sports
Itβs been a wild ride for Michigan State over the last few months. At one point, the Spartans didn't have a president or an athletic director, yet both of their former leaders were still technically in place while committed to going elsewhere. Then, President Kevin Guskiewicz decided to return to Michigan State despite taking less money than he was set to make after leaving. That led many to wonder if Athletic Director J Batt might also return. Those questions can now officially be put to rest.
Michigan State's athletic director, J Batt, did exceptional work during his brief tenure in East Lansing, including helping hire new Spartans football head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Batt was also instrumental in securing a historic $400 million donation for Michigan State, the largest single donation ever made to a college athletic department.

However, Batt decided his talents were better suited for Kentucky after accepting the position a few months ago. It has now been confirmed that he will officially begin his new role later this month.

With Batt leaving Michigan State, there was also the matter of his buyout. Having signed a contract with the Spartans less than a year ago, leaving early came with a financial cost. Kentucky has agreed to pay the full buyout, with the payments to Michigan State being completed between now and July 1, 2027.
Per a report from Kentucky:
"UK will pay Michigan State $3.95 million between now and July 1, 2027, under the terms of Batt's contract. The transition process will continue in the weeks ahead before Batt arrives in Lexington on July 28."
Batt also shared his excitement about the opportunity.
"As we prepare to begin another academic and athletic year in Lexington, we will work to continue to deliver results at the highest levels," Batt said. "We will not shy away from lofty standards of excellence β not only in competition but in how we support our student-athlete experience, how we engage our fanbase and how we conduct our operations. I promise to give my all to our great staff, to the University, to the Big Blue Nation and, most importantly, to our student-athletes each and every day."
Despite the return of President Kevin Guskiewicz, Batt has decided to stay true to his earlier commitment to Kentucky and will officially leave East Lansing for Lexington later this month.
The Spartans will remember Batt's short but impactful tenure as a glimpse of what could have been. Regardless of the reasons behind his decision to leave, his time at Michigan State will be remembered for helping secure the largest donation in college sports history while also landing one of the top coaching candidates to lead the football program.
Michigan State will now turn its attention toward finding Batt's replacement. The university was waiting for official confirmation from both Batt and Kentucky before moving forward with its search.
There are plenty of qualified candidates the Spartans can consider, but finding the right fit will be imperative. Just as importantly, the Board of Trustees will need to ensure the instability that surrounded Michigan State over the past several months doesn't happen again.
