MARSHALL — A little cool, some wind and a lot of rain. Those conditions made it tough on the field of professional golfers for the annual FireKeepers event.

Unless, you are used to those conditions.
After playing at Northwestern University near Chicago, dealing with the elements in the Midwest has become part of the game for Lauryn Nguyen. And, she used that experience to win her first professional event just a few hours from her alma mater on a cool, wet and windy day in Marshall.

Nguyen won the 13th annual FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship at The Medalist in Marshall on Sunday, June 14. She finished 12-under-par for the three rounds, including a 70 on the final day, which included a three-hour rain delay.
"Conditions were really tricky. So I just took it one shot at a time and that kept me in a good position," Nguyen said. "I've hit thousands of balls in the rain and the wind. Don't know if that gave me an edge today, but good to know I had that experience of playing in conditions like this."
Nguyen is coming off an impressive college career where she helped Northwestern win a NCAA National Championship last year. In her rookie season on the Epson Tour - Road to the LPGA, Nguyen already has three top 10 finishes, including the championship this weekend, which earned her $30,000 for first place.
"This is super special," Nguyen said. "Didn't know what to expect my first year on the tour. I was just looking to learn the ropes, so it's really cool to be able to have some good finishes and to come out with a win.”
Second place was Epson and LPGA veteran Jenny Coleman, finishing at 9-under par for the tournament, highlighted by a 5-under round of 67 on Saturday. Fellow rookie, Mirabel Ting, followed closely behind to round out the podium at 8-under, after firing a 4-under 68 on Sunday.
Winning weekend for The Medalist
The 2026 FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship was in its first year at The Medalist in Marshall after the first 12 summers at the Battle Creek Country Club.
"It's really been a pleasure being at The Medalist this weekend. We run things in a four diamond manner at FireKeepers and we have come to find that's the same way The Medalist runs its golf course. The staff was outstanding, so appreciative of the volunteers. We're excited about many years in the future here at The Medalist. Attendance, we believe set a record this weekend. And, we had a great course that was challenging for the players," said Jim Wise, Vice President of Marketing at FireKeepers Casino Hotel.
