Now-former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Ilia Topuria suffered a technical knockout loss via corner stoppage at the hands — and fists — of Justin Gaethje last night (Sun., June 14, 2026) at UFC Freedom 250 live on Paramount+ on the South Lawn in Washington, D.C., as UFC celebrated America’s 250th anniversary (watch highlights).
Immediately after the loss, company officials confirmed to MMAmania.com that Topuria was transported to a local hospital for a precautionary CT scan of his head and face following the violent stoppage.
Topuria (17-1) had his pristine undefeated record snapped in one of the more violent title fights you’ll ever see, losing his Lightweight title in the process. “El Matador” is now 9-1 inside the Octagon.
Prior to the loss, Topuria was on one of the best runs the sport has ever seen, knocking out Alexander Volkanovski (watch it), Max Holloway (watch highlights) and Charles Oliveira (watch highlights) consecutively, which earned him double-champion status and made him one of the biggest stars in the sport.
Topuria’s aura may have taken a hit, but his stock should not completely fall off a cliff. After all, he went out in a war against Gaethje, who finally captured the undisputed Lightweight title after years of chaos, heartbreak and violence.
And with Gaethje potentially walking away from the sport after such an epic accomplishment, the Lightweight division could be thrown into complete disarray.
Time will tell.
It is not a rare occurrence for UFC to transport fighters to the hospital for precautionary reasons, especially if the fighters are involved in three-round battles full of damage. As of this writing, Topuria’s scan results have not been officially released.
