Cathedral Prep grad Breckin Taylor repeats as EDGA Match Play champion

Breckin Taylor and Mike Wolfe are familiar names to Erie’s current golf scene.
They were the Erie District Golf Association’s last two Match Play Tournament champions going into the 54th annual event, held at Whispering Woods Golf Course.

Their June 13 pairing, though, was still unique.
Taylor, a University of Dayton (Ohio) senior-to-be, defended as its champion with a 2 and 1 victory vs. Wolfe. The 2023 Cathedral Prep graduate also won 4 and 3 when they met in last year’s title match at Lake Shore Country Club.
Taylor and Wolfe, who golfed for McDowell and Allegheny College, didn’t learn the historical nature of their final until it was over.
Their dual, according to the EDGA's website, marked the first time the same players faced off in a Match Play final for consecutive years since its 1973 debut.
“(Winning) this once was great,” Taylor said, “but doing it back-to-back is even more special. Mike and I have been battling it out all year at different events, so it was nice to (compete) against a familiar face.
“It was fun (win) this with a bunch of birdies on the back nine.”
Sooner than expected
The tournament also concluded a day earlier than scheduled.
Taylor beat Chase Recio 4 and 2 and Wolfe defeated Tim Weyand 5 and 4 in the morning’s semifinals. However, because of Erie’s June 13 weather forecast, they and tournament director Dave Hewett agreed to remain at Whispering Woods for an afternoon final.
“Back-to-back days of 36 (holes) is something I haven’t done too often,” Taylor said, “but I’m kind of glad we got this out of the way with the (forecast). I’ve done this every week or so in college, so that was great preparation for something like this.”
Taylor was the Match Play’s first repeat titlist since Drew Deimel in 2018-19.
What’s next
Taylor, as was the case last year, said his Dayton schedule makes it doubtful he’ll enter the EDGA’s stroke play tournament and vie for a year’s sweep of its majors.
The 2026 Marquette Savings Bank Amateur Championship is scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 14 at Lawrence Park Golf Club. Alex Weir is the defending champion.
Weir won last year’s tournament at the Kahkwa Club after years of near misses for first place in EDGA majors.
