Lions' Dan Campbell sarcastically crowns Rams champs after Garrett move

Allen Park — After the Los Angeles Rams acquired superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett in a trade earlier this week, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell is ready to crown them as champions.

Sarcastically, of course.

"Good for them. I mean, they've won (the Super Bowl) now, right?" Campbell quipped from the podium on Thursday before elaborating that he had no reaction to the move that sent Garrett to Los Angeles in exchange for multiple draft picks and up-and-coming edge rusher Jared Verse.

The updated Super Bowl odds indicate that the Rams, who won the Super Bowl in 2021, are the clear front-runners to do it again in 2026. Los Angeles is +550 to win the Super Bowl (via DraftKings), with the second-closest teams to the top being the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens, both at +1000.

The Rams were already projected to be among the favorites in both the NFC and across the entire league after quarterback Matthew Stafford, coming off his first MVP season, announced his intention to return for one more year.

The Lions don't have the Rams on the schedule this season, meaning if the Lions do have to play Garrett, it'll be in the playoffs. New Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who overlapped with Garrett in Cleveland for three seasons, noted, "I hope we're playing him this year."

"I saw it firsthand; he's a great player. Kind of like the guys we talked about on this offense, I don't know if there's a weakness in his game," Petzing said of Garrett. "He does so many things at such a high level, plays with such violence. So, (he's) a great player."

Ultimately, Campbell seems to think that both players involved in the deal are pretty good. Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, broke the NFL sack record (23 sacks). Verse, a first-round pick by the Rams in 2024, has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons and was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year after his inaugural campaign; he has 12 sacks in two seasons.

"I mean, (Garrett is) a hell of a player. Verse is a hell of a player, and they're two totally different players, but that was what they felt like they needed to do, and good for them," Campbell said.

Asked a follow-up on what it would take for the Lions to get involved in a deal of such magnitude, Campbell said, "I guess I would tell you when that time happens."
