Bill Bradley knows what a championship run feels like in New York. He also knows that when the NBA Finals return to Madison Square Garden, not even a president is supposed to be the main attraction.

The former Knicks star and former U.S. senator reacted after President Donald Trump revealed that Knicks owner James Dolan had invited him to attend an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden. Speaking with TMZ Sports, Bradley’s response was short and memorable: if Trump shows up, he should understand he will be “second fiddle.”
Bradley was part of the Knicks teams that won championships in 1970 and 1973, and he remains one of the few people who understands what a title run means to a fan base that has been waiting more than five decades for another banner.
Bradley’s Point Was Bigger Than Politics

Madison Square Garden has hosted presidents, celebrities, music legends, championship fighters, and some of the biggest names in entertainment. Bradley’s message was that none of them are the story right now.
The story is the Knicks.
New York is back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 and chasing its first championship since 1973. When a city has waited that long, the spotlight belongs to the players on the floor.
Trump Says James Dolan Invited Him
Image Credit: Rawpixel.com / Shutterstock. The invitation became public after Trump told reporters that Dolan had invited him to attend the Finals. The Associated Press reported that Trump said he had also hoped to attend a later game in the Eastern Conference Finals, but New York’s series ended before that became possible.
If Trump attends a Finals game, his presence would become part of the television coverage. A sitting president courtside at Madison Square Garden during the NBA Finals would be difficult to ignore.
Bradley’s reaction suggests Knicks fans may not care nearly as much about who is sitting courtside as they do about who is holding the basketball.
The Knicks Have Turned the Garden Into the Center of the Sports World
The Knicks are no longer just a good story. They have become the story.
New York completed a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, including a dominant 130-93 closeout victory. Jalen Brunson was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP, while Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby helped push the franchise to a stage many fans feared they might never see again.
The playoff run has changed the atmosphere around the team. Every game has become a citywide event, and every celebrity appearance has felt secondary to what is happening on the court.
The Celebrity Factor Is Already Built In
Image Credit: ALEXANDRE F FAGUNDES / Shutterstock.Madison Square Garden has already become a celebrity showcase throughout the postseason.
Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Tracy Morgan, Timothée Chalamet, Fat Joe, and other high-profile fans have appeared during the Knicks’ playoff run. The crowd has become part of the broadcast, with cameras regularly cutting to celebrities reacting to big moments.
Trump would be the highest-profile guest yet, but Bradley’s comment reflects the way many Knicks fans see the moment. The celebrities are extras. The team is the attraction.
A Knicks Legend Knows What This Moment Means
Bradley is not speaking as an outside observer. He is one of the last living links to the franchise’s championship era.
For decades, Knicks fans have watched other franchises celebrate titles while New York chased the memory of its glory years. Now the franchise is four wins away from ending one of the longest title droughts in American professional sports.
A president attending the game would be newsworthy. A Knicks championship would be history.
