Unlike their slow, lumbering predecessors, the 2026 Boston Red Sox are fast, dynamic and athletic. Their speed is a big reason why they're above average in stolen bases and rank among the best defensive teams in baseball.
Which Red Sox player is the fastest? NESN recently asked many Boston players to find out, and their replies were surprisingly mixed.
Most said either Jarren Duran, Trevor Story or Ceddanne Rafaela, which are all pretty good guesses.

According to Statcast's average sprint speed metric, Duran is the fastest Red Sox player by a hair at 29.0 feet per second entering play on Friday. Rafaela is right behind him at 28.9 feet per second.
Story actually ranks sixth at 27.9 feet per second. Caleb Durbin, Wilyer Abreu and Nick Sogard are all tied for third place at 28.1 feet per second.
Duran leads Boston in stolen bases with 10, more than twice as many as any of his teammates. He hasn't been caught yet, either, so he seems to be using his speed the most and using it to his advantage.
The Red Sox have been more aggressive running the bases under interim manager Chad Tracy than they were under Alex Cora, so it wouldn't be surprising to see several players set career highs in steals this year.
