Alhama fall short at Eibar
While they were not relegated at Ipurua, Alhama were left hovering over the trap door with a 2-0 defeat in Saturday’s clash against Eibar. Camino kept her composure from the spot to send the Basque side into the break with a narrow lead. Alhama’s hopes of salvaging a positive result were quashed when Carmen Álvarez added a second midway through the second half.
Logroño celebrate Liga F safety
After being left on the brink, Alhama’s inevitable fate was confirmed with DUX Logroño’s 4-1 success over relegated Levante on Sunday. After playing out a goalless first half, Levante were reduced to ten players in the opening three minutes of the second period. Teresa Merida was given marching orders for making a foul as the last defender. Moments later, Isina broke the deadlock with an unstoppable free-kick from distance. Annelie Leitner then scored in a third consecutive game, before Ximena Velazco bundled home a third to put the visitors in the driving seat.
Levante eventually got on the scoresheet through an Ariana Arias penalty. However, that counted for very little in a disappointing display that was compounded by Iria Castro’s stoppage-time effort. Logroño celebrated a win that secured them a second successive season of top-flight football and condemned Alhama to the second tier.
Barcelona see off Tenerife
Barcelona came from behind to beat Costa Adeje Tenerife 3-1 on Sunday. Paulina Gramaglia put the hosts into a surprise lead at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The Argentine met a curling cross to send a looping header in off the post. However, their hopes of a victory were dealt a major blow by Violeta Quiles’s 32nd-minute red card.
The Blaugrana ultimately made full use of their numerical advantage. Esmee Brugts started the fightback with an equaliser in first-half stoppage time. Kika Nazareth then headed Barcelona in front from Patri Guijarro’s inviting cross, before Clàudia Pina wrapped up the win with a powerful drive from the edge of the box.
Real Madrid prevail in derby
Second-placed Real Madrid remain three points clear of third-placed Real Sociedad after edging out local rivals Atlético Madrid in Sunday’s derby clash. Caroline Weir netted the decisive strike in the 25th minute. The Scotland international latched onto a headed clearance to steer an inch-perfect volley over Lola Gallardo. The impressive strike ended Atleti’s run of six consecutive Liga F victories.
Who else won on Liga F match-day 28?
Real Sociedad made light work of their home fixture against Granada. Cecilia Marcos’s attempted cross turned into the opening goal. The dipping ball from the left flank evaded the goalkeeper and dropped in at the far post. Boasting a narrow lead at half-time, Real Sociedad doubled their advantage in the 66th minute. Claire Lavogez was on hand to turn the ball in from Emma Ramírez’s controlled knockdown. Matters got worse for Granada when Manoly Baquerizo was dismissed for two bookable offences. Moments later, Klára Cahynová grabbed her fourth league goal of the season to round off a comfortable victory for La Real.
The end of the season cannot come soon enough for a Sevilla side that suffered a sixth consecutive defeat on matchday 28. Sevilla’s opponents, Madrid CFF, broke the deadlock through Mônica’s 26th-minute header. Substitute Nerea Sánchez doubled the lead in the second period, slotting a composed strike beyond Esther Sullastres to open her Liga F account. A late Estefanía González red card could not dampen the home side’s mood as they brought an end to their six-game winless run.
Elsewhere, Deportivo La Coruña claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in their away meeting with Athletic Club. Ainhoa Marín’s 55th-minute effort proved enough to secure her team’s fourth away league win of the season.
A penalty apiece in all-Catalan clash
Espanyol and Badalona had to settle for a share of the spoils in a game that produced two penalty goals. Ana González dispatched a 22nd-minute spot-kick after being brought down in the box. Sonia García Majarín then gave Espanyol the chance to level after making a rash challenge on Ainoa Campo. The Espanyol picked herself off the ground to slide the subsequent penalty out of Romane Salvador’s reach. The referee had to get involved again when María Llompart made a late tackle in the closing stages of the contest, resulting in a second yellow card.
