UTSA kicker Jaffer Murphy goes viral with insane pro day stats
· Yahoo Sports
As we get ready for the 2026 NFL Draft to begin in just over a month, college football programs across the nation are holding pro days to give their players a better chance to show what they can do at the next level. These events are fun to watch, as top prospects can prove themselves worthy of early draft picks.

They are also fun because they help identify lesser-heard-of players who may surprise some people at the next level. Over the weekend, UTSA Roadrunners kicker Jaffer Murphy became one of those guys. At his pro day, Murphy went viral for some of the numbers that he put up, doing things that nobody expected a kicker to be able to do.
Murphy was clocked at running a 4.47 40-yard dash, and he drilled a 70-yard field goal. On top of that, Murphy knocked in 12 of his 13 field goal attempts, at varying distances.

While the blazing 40-time likely won't come into play very much during his potential NFL career, the accuracy and kick-power that Murphy displayed were impressive, to say the least. There are multiple reports online that Murphy spoke to a dozen NFL teams at the pro day, as scouts and franchises work to determine whether they want to take a chance on him in next month's draft.
While it's less common for kickers to be selected in the draft, and more typical for them to sign as undrafted free agents, hearing a kicker come off the board in the middle-to-late rounds is not unheard of. Last year, a pair of kickers — Miami's Andres Borregales and Arizona's Tyler Loop — were selected in the sixth round, and in 2023, Michigan's Jake Moody was taken in the third round. In fact, the highest a kicker has ever been drafted was in 1966, when Princeton kicker Charlie Gogolak went to the Washington Redskins with the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.
Sebastian Janikowski was also drafted in the first round of the 2000 draft, going to the Oakland Raiders with the No. 17 overall pick. In total, there have been five kickers to ever be selected in the first round of the draft.
So, will Murphy be the sixth kicker to ever hear his name called in the first round? It seems incredibly unlikely, but at this point, don't be surprised if some NFL team takes a chance on him during Day 2 or Day 3 of the draft.
