The era of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo was perhaps the club’s most fearsome attacking era and it was always clear that it would be difficult for any players who were passed the baton.

Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo Goes were the first young players of the next generation to take up responsibility in attack, and have now been joined by Kylian Mbappe.

Rodrygo’s regret

Speaking on a podcast, Rodrygo opened up on his one regret as a footballer and how he narrowly missed out on his biggest dream.

His disappointment was related to Cristiano Ronaldo and being unable to share the field with the Real Madrid legend.

“I wanted to play with Cristiano Ronaldo, but it didn’t happen,” he began (h/t Madrid Xtra).

“It’s a shame as he’s my role model. I have always looked up to him” he added, revealing how much the Portuguese legend meant to him.

Ronaldo left Real Madrid to join Juventus in the summer of 2018 after nine successful seasons with Los Blancos, and Rodrygo was not at the club yet at that point.

Real Madrid, after all, reached an agreement with Santos over Rodrygo’s signing in June 2018, one month before Ronaldo’s departure. Yet, the player could not leave and join his new club immediately because of his age and pre-contract rules.

He eventually arrived at the Spanish capital in July 2019, exactly one year after the departure of Ronaldo.

The ongoing season has not been very easy for the youngster, with injuries and lack of minutes hampering him. Now, with his fitness improved, one can expect Rodrygo to have more prominence.
