On their best day, the Los Angeles Lakers can have one of the strongest offenses in the league. With Luka Doncic as their superstar player, anything is possible with him dictating the team's offense. His teammates often get the ball in the right spots, and he can dominate his matchup with his shot-making.
Despite Doncic's fantastic offensive capabilities, the Lakers do lack some ball movement. They are a much better team when the ball is moving, and everyone is involved, which head coach JJ Redick is holding himself accountable for.
Redick shoulders the blame for the Lakers' lack of ball movement
Over the past few seasons, NBA fans have gotten to know that when Doncic is playing, the system revolves around him. It was called a "heliocentric" way of playing basketball because the system does not work without the star.
The Dallas Mavericks succeeded because of it, and the Lakers are bound to succeed with it as well. However, the Lakers have a roster that is much better than just relying on one guy.
LeBron James is still a game-changer, even at 41. Austin Reaves is an All-Star-level talent who can turn the game on its head by himself. The rest of the team can benefit from more touches, too, which is why people want better ball movement.
As the head coach, Redick is in charge of the offense. Putting the ball in Doncic's hands is the best choice, but the Lakers might need more dynamic offensive sets rather than just fully relying on Doncic's pick-and-rolls and isolations.
Redick seems to know this because he wants to adjust the offense and make it more reliant on ball movement. If that can happen, the Lakers could have a more potent offense because everyone is contributing.
"When the teams play the deep drop, we have our counters, and we just have to execute. When the ball is changing hands quickly, it can get to drag after drag. I took ownership of that. We have our counters for deep drop," Redick said about his offense when playing against a set defense.
"We looked it up today. Our lowest potential assist games are all against the deep drop, so I got to do a better job."
Considering that he knows a big problem when teams are setting up against them, this is a good sign for Redick. Knowing that he is a problem point against an effective defensive scheme matters because he knows he has to make adjustments.
When that happens, the offense will be more unpredictable. It should be a tougher offensive system to put out, but the Lakers have all the talent in the world to execute the game plan.
