Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory over Mainz came at a significant cost, with Manuel Neuer now facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a partial tendon tear in his right foot.

The club confirmed the injury on its website following an examination by its medical department. Neuer was forced off shortly before halftime during Saturday’s Bundesliga encounter, with Jonas Urbig coming on to replace the captain.
While Bayern Munich initially offered no specific timetable for his return, Bild reports that the 40-year-old is expected to miss approximately two months. That would represent a considerable blow for Vincent Kompany’s side, particularly with the busy stretch of the season ahead.
Neuer’s absence also puts the spotlight firmly on Urbig, who is expected to take over first-choice goalkeeping duties during his captain’s recovery. The young goalkeeper has already been viewed as Neuer’s long-term successor, but this presents another important opportunity to demonstrate that he can handle the responsibility at Bayern Munich.
The timing is far from ideal. Bayern Munich will now have to navigate the coming weeks without its captain, its most experienced goalkeeper, and one of the most influential figures in the dressing room.
Three points against Mainz, but losing Neuer for potentially two months is a very steep price to pay. However, Urbig has been excellent this season and is rated by many to be the goalkeeper of the future for both Bayern Munich and Germany. For a positive outlook, this is Urbig time to cement himself as “the next one.”
