“Not a Very Good Pocket QB”: John Middlekauff Refuses to Back Down From Bo Nix Criticism as he Explains Issues With Broncos Star
· Yahoo Sports
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix rallied in the fourth quarter with a 15-point comeback to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Despite leading the Broncos to a 28-24 victory, Nix’s inability to drive the ball into enemy territory in the first three quarters has become the center of criticism.

On Monday, former NFL scout John Middlekauff refused to back down from his criticism of Nix. The former scout explained the issue with Nix in the first three quarters, where he has struggled to help the Broncos this season.
“I think we have to acknowledge that this goes back to college; he’s not a very good pocket quarterback,” Middlekauff said via 3 & OUT with John Middlekauff’s X. “When he has to make a throw inside the pocket, I think you would all agree that he doesn’t excel. I’m not acting like the guy’s a scrub, but we have to all come to an agreement that he’s the most clutch quarterback in the NFL. Well, he’s literally in this situation every week because of his own undoing.”
“If you could just have him for the fourth quarter, he’d be your pick,” Middlekauff added. “You do not want him in the first, second, or third quarter.”
In Sunday’s comeback win against the Chiefs, Nix completed 15-of-26 passes for 153 yards in the first three quarters. Only seven of his 26 attempts resulted in first downs, and he was also just 1-of-8 on third-down attempts. However, in the fourth quarter, Nix went 5-of-6 for 84 yards, helping Denver erase an 11-point deficit and take the lead.
What Makes Bo Nix Most Clutch Fourth Quarter QB
Adding to Bo Nix’s reputation as the most clutch quarterback, the Broncos signal-caller has 12 fourth-quarter comebacks since entering the NFL in 2024, tied for the most by a quarterback in his first three seasons.
Sunday’s win, in which Nix engineered two touchdown drives and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter of a 28-24 victory, marked his 15th career game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime. According to ProFootballTalk’s Michael Smith, no other quarterback in NFL history has that many game-winning drives in his first three seasons.
Nix surpassed Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who had 14 game-winning drives in his first three seasons in the NFL.
As a rookie in 2024, Nix had three game-winning drives, followed by an NFL-high seven last year, and a league-leading five this season.
